Blue Owl: Milk & Honey, Back Room, etc. The city’s prohibition-era bar trend is in full effect and Blue Owl is having some fun with it. Marked only by a lit picture of the namesake bird sitting below a less-used Second Avenue stretch, this lounge is easy to miss, but well worth seeking out. In addition to its urban camouflage, genre standards like pressed tin, exposed stone walls, and specialty cocktails abound. Seen it before? Not quite. Here, DJs spin classic, funk, soul, hip-hop, and acid jazz tunes, singles mingle, and you won’t feel like an idiot ordering a plain ol’ beer. The staff is amazingly attentive, even alerting standing patrons when empty tables appear. Not “speakeasy” enough for you trendsters? Fine—the small “Cocktail Room” in back has its own entrance where a door person admits only those who know the password. Sundays have live jazz. |
