Bar Pleiades: Bar-hoppers up on their astronomy know that there are seven stars in the Pleiades. As for its namesake bar, though, it can claim one—chef Daniel Bouloud. Bar Pleiades, on the first floor of the luxurious Surrey Hotel, embodies everything you would expect in an Upper East Side lounge: creative drinks inspired by "four culinary muses"; a quiet, elegant atmosphere; and stratospheric prices (cocktails starting at $15). The interior of this swanky lounge is laced with two candlelit nooks filled with comfortable banquette-style seating, along with a small bar and a (star-)cluster of several intimate tables. The result: an apt setting for your "Autumn Thyme" (vodka, raspberries, thyme, lime and peach bitters) or your Beijing Mule (saffron-roasted pear, vodka, yuzu leaf and ginger beer). The only thing that this bar doesn’t have, in fact, is food—odd for a place opened by a chef—so be sure to fill up on some (cheap) eats on the way there. Oh, and we checked: The Beijing Mule is not also the name of a constellation. |
