Bar Americain:
Bobby Flay’s version of an American brasserie is certainly less showy than his Crayola-happy Mesa Grill and Bolo, despite being almost double the size. Boasting a David Rockwell design, Bar Americain’s muted yellow-and rusty-orange-colored walls, low-hanging lighting fixtures, and tilted antique mirror are subdued in a comforting way. Even though the place is perpetually packed, nothing is too tight—tables for two can easily fit four, and the zinc bar is practically never-ending—which is an especially good thing since it’s not uncommon to find it three-deep on a Tuesday night. Every one of the 200 dining room seats is kept full by a menu of spice-rubbed steak, chicken with cornbread dressing, and homemade potato chips with blue cheese. Let’s not forget the handsome list of bourbon (33), Scotch (23), and wine (350+) to choose from. God bless Bar Americain.
