What’s happened to the good ol’ days, when any afternoon you could walk into your regular watering hole and find the friendly neighborhood drunks sharing their post-lunch, pre-dinner pints? As NoHo and NoLita succumb to the same forces that have turned Greenwich Village into less of a village and more of a scene, there are increasingly few places where you can at least imagine that everybody knows your name. Despite its cavernous size and the massive projector screen at one end of the room, this place maintains much of that brothers-in-drinking feel. This charm is partly due to the large collection of old “Tom & Jerry” crockery that lines the wall behind the bar. Though there is a cat that prowls the premises, these actually refer to an old egg-based cocktail, not the cartoon. Oh, and prepare to meet some of the nicest bartenders in town when you pop in for the Monday-Friday, 5pm-7pm happy hour.
