Apiary: In the land formerly known as Greenwich Village, now called “NYU,” an upscale spot sits on a Third Avenue block better known for its pita pockets and fro-yo than wine-and-food pairings. Though many of the new restos that set up shop here did so in response to the news that NYU was building yet another dorm in the area, we have to assume this one's for the deep-pocketed parents. The American food veers on the pricey side (don’t expect any side dishes with your $28 scallops and prawns), but given that it’s under the leadership of chef Neil Manacle, Bobby Flay's right hand man at Bolo, Mesa Grill, and Bar Americain for 16 years, it should be spot-on. The sleek, angular decor by French furniture maker Ligne Roset makes the place seem like a showroom, but will probably appeal to anyone who wants to feel on display. If your budget is more undergrad than alumni, the front bar seats about 10, where you can indulge in Apiary’s seasonal sangrias, draft and bottled beers, and wine selection—don’t skip the white peach sangria ($10), with its touch of cinnamon it may well be the best in town.
