Hipsters, hippies, and vegans might not approve of the steakhouse’s cartoon cow logo, but the more Middle American diners at Angelo & Maxie’s enjoy the whimsical characters on the wall and menu as they dive into heavy plates of lobster, piled-on sides, and of course, steak. But even if you’re not a whole-hearted carnivore, the spot has a warm vibe with its art-deco and all-wood interior. And prior to Bloomberg’s smoking ban, the small back bar functioned as an old-school cigar lounge. These days, the front bar keeps busy flanked with regulars and locals. The martinis are as heavy on alcohol as the steaks are on beef, but don’t feel limited by the menu; the bartenders will make your request or pour you their personal specialty if you ask.
