Aldea: If you’re wondering what it would be like to eat coconut-curry calamari on the chill-out deck of the Enterprise, Aldea may give you an idea. The fare may be Mediterranean, but the setting is 100% futuristic Zen garden, with all the staples of minimalist décor in full effect. Chilly lighting? Check. Austere furnishings? Of course. Batsh*t insane modern-industrial design flourishes? That depends what you think of the concave ceiling installation comprised of 400 open-ended acrylic tubes, which looms above the open kitchen like a giant, intergalactic jellyfish. The food, on the other hand, is a bit more down-to-earth: a well-executed array of traditional Portuguese charcuterie offerings, seafood appetizers, and imaginative desserts with vaguely Orwellian names like “Little Dreams.” Plus, with eight countries worth of wines to help wash it all down, Aldea’s a good place to bring a date, especially if he or she is from Vulcan. |
