Absinthe Wine Bar: Talk about an identity crisis – the outside of the restaurant/bar is named 111 First Avenue, but inside the staff refers to the place by the name “Absinthe”, this, despite the fact that they do not sell a single drop of the celebrated spirit, nor any other hard liquor for that matter (they got the name from the style of wallpaper they used to decorate their new digs – go figure). The place is typically stylish – it’s a wine bar in the East Village after all, with a list of over 100 wines to choose from, and small dish eatery offering playful takes on odd little Spanish- and French-inspired dishes. The crowd is completely chill and the service very helpful. Prices are a bit steep, but you’d be hard pressed to find a cheap wine bar anywhere in NYC. Open Sun.-Thurs., 4:30pm-1am, Fri.-Sat., 4:30pm-2am. |
