(Le) Poisson Rouge:
Just when you thought all artistic integrity had been sucked out of NYC’s cookie-cutter nightlife, Greenwich Village gets a performance space fit for orchestras and punk rockers alike. (Le) Poisson Rouge is touting itself as a multimedia cabaret with a décor inspired by 1920’s Paris. The black and red interior features a fish tank chandelier in the entrance (with red fish, of course) and the main concert hall includes two film screens and two elevated VIP opera boxes. Founded by classical musicians who met at Manhattan School of Music (composer/violinist David Handler and cellist/teacher Justin Kantor), the historic, Art Deco 800-capacity venue (formerly the Village Gate) is a tribute to music’s role as a cultural focal point. Architectural acoustician John Storyk from Electric Lady Studios and Jazz @ Lincoln Center outfitted the space with top-notch sound equipment, and the eclectic gigs keep on comin'. Open Sun.-Wed. 12pm-2am, Thu.-Sat. 12pm-4am.
This venue has a terrible sound system in the main room. Went to go see Doppler Effeckt last night and was so disappointed with the sound that after the half of show I just left and went home to listen to them on my Ipod. It is a shame because who ever books the shows has good taste and eclectic taste in music.
There was also a security guard at the door with a real nasty personality. There was absolutely no line waiting to get in so there was no reason for him to be so rude. I have read on many different blogs that security there has had a lot of complaints.

Doesn't seem like anybody has reviewed this place in awhile...I happened to be at both the Dan Deacon show and the Sebastien Tellier show (and a few more since.) Yes, it did stink at Dan Deacon, but I'm not sure how that is the club's fault. (The crowd was just stinky.) And Sebestien Teliier was a crowded, and it took some time to get in, but what do people expect? It is NY, and it is a hot club. I have been back since, and had no trouble with the door (aside from what I would expect from a soldout show at a small space.) Anyway, the sound is great, they have great music and they seem to be trying to bring some taste back to the NYU beer pong area....classy, comfortable, and lots of fun. I recommend.

This club is awful - I bought tickets 2 weeks in advance for the recent Dec 11. sold-out Sebastien Tellier show. The doors were listed to open at 10:30 pm, headlining artist to perform at 12:00 a.m. I got there at 10:30 and stood in an unmoving line outside in pouring rain for 3 hours, and when I realized I was missing the artists I intended to see, I left without even getting in. Mind you, I was still waiting in line after 3 hours and the line hadn't moved forward at all. The organization the venue has in place to let in people with advance tickets was terrible and I will never buy advance tickets to this venue again. Places such as Webster Hall holds triple the volume of this club and it takes 30 minutes for the will call to get in if even that.
They also did not refund my admission. This club and its promoters are a bunch of frauds and their customer service is shit.

I was at the same Dan Deacon show. I work there. The place NEVER smells like that. Dan Deacon's bus of 70 smelly hippies invaded and stank up the joint to an unholy degree. Also, we had a couple complaints about security and a bunch were fired. So, those problems solved!

I went to Dan Deacon's show last night. I was very disappointed in this venue. The performance space smelled horrible. I can't imagine how bad it would be during the summer. The worst thing though , the reason I would never go back, is because one of the security guards, unprovoked, grabbed me and then started choking me because I tried to go out of the wrong exit. I couldn't believe it. He literally grabbed me, and then I told him to let go of me. Then he shoved me back towards the stage and started choking me. This is so unacceptable. I can't believe I am having to write this review. Please don't go to Le Poisson Rouge. There are too many other great venues in New York for you to waste your time at this crappy venue who hires thugs to do their security.
