2A:
“Nostalgic” is a nice way of putting it. Sorry, 2A; this juke joint has lost its edge. Baby-faced frat boys accompanied by their Barbie-like gal pals have inspired the former clientele to pull a disappearing act. The grungy East Villagers who used to frequent 2A have moved even deeper into Alphabet City seeking less conventional gin mills. The new generation seems to enjoy the bi-level, street-view windows and ’80s-era tunes and if you down enough signature martinis in the upstairs lounge, you just might feel like you’re partying back in the 2A heyday. (Okay, maybe not.) Still, 2A’s a decent place to hit before you move on to much hipper pastures. Open daily 4pm-4am.
I've been here twice, and both time the bartenders have been extremely rude. The first time, the male bartender downstairs berated my friend for ordering her drink wrong (she ordered a coke and rum instead of a rum and coke - a minor slip up after a few drinks). He embarrassed her in front of a large group of people, and was generally crude. I've never been treated like that before and mind you, the place far from full (the upstairs was empty), so I'm not sure why he thought he should push people away. I thought I'd give it one more shot, so I went back on a weeknight. The female bartender downstairs was just as rude. I don't know why these people get off on belittling their patrons, but I'll definitely never be going back to support this place. Maybe they are losing their edge because they aren't nice people!
