What’s your association with Upstairs? And do you have any explanation for how a random space above Café Bari became one of the hottest places in town?
M: Café Bari is my old neighborhood hangout (I grew up in SoHo), and to us the project was somewhat of an experiment to see if we could bring nightlife back to the ‘hood. Now there are several new joints opening up in SoHo, especially on the Eastern and Western edges. Upstairs is a cool place to hang out because we developed a strategy for what it is and stuck with it. We never mass-marketed it, publicized it, or sold it out. Upstairs does not try to be something that it is not. It is just a cool late-night spot where our friends can come hang out and be comfortable.
