Taste of Times Square
Posted Monday, June 11, 2007  3:47:52 PM  by Michelle Friedman
If New York City doesn’t lack one thing, it’s flavor. Tonight from 5–8:30pm Times Square is holding its annual Taste of Times Square, as the areas premiere restaurants offer their signature dishes and showcase a variety of international foods. The festival will also feature street performers, swing dancing, and the interactive music of The Drum Circle, which encourages festival goers to join in the music making. The combination of food, dancing and drums, if nothing else, will help you forget its Monday.

Think Art
Posted Monday, June 11, 2007  2:52:57 PM  by Michelle Friedman
This Father’s Day veto the traditional overly sentimental card and overpriced dinner for a gift that demonstrates creativity, originality, and thought. Devise an art tour for dad of all of New York’s greatest museums and exhibits and you won’t be able to get that smirk off his face until his next visit. Plus, we’ve already done all the legwork. The MET, the MOMA, and the Whitney are three staples you don’t want to miss. Between the three, you can see virtually every major piece of artwork on display in the U.S. The MET features impressive collections of both classical and contemporary art, and the grandeur and elegance of the museum alone is simply breathtaking. In addition to art the MOMA is home to a broad collection of architecture, digital art, and several forms of new media presentations. The Whitney’s Psychedelic Art exhibit is all the rage among New Yorker’s and may make dad reminiscent for more than those those bell bottom pants he wore in high school.

Detox Delight
Posted Monday, June 11, 2007  10:03:28 AM  by Michelle Friedman
If detox is your new addiction, then Indochine is about to become your new obsession. If you prefer your fun without a side of intoxication, or if you (or your baby mommy) are swearing off mind altering substances for the nine hellacious, ahem precious, months of pregnancy, you no longer have to deprive yourself of the cocktail you crave. Indochine has just created a menu of alcohol free cocktail drinks that sound just as good as they taste. The sizable menu features a Mango Mojito (a combination of lime juice, mango juice, brown sugar, fresh mango, lime, and mint leaves topped with club soda, sugar cane, and mint sprig) and the Lychee Mist for all those lychee lovers (muddled lychees, lychee juice, lime juice, a hint of jasmine and vanilla extract, poured over ice with blueberries). The only hangover you’ll feel the next morning is a craving for more.

Freaks Come Out at Night
Posted Friday, June 08, 2007  4:18:59 PM  by Michelle Friedman
Manhattanites, your going to need to take your darkest eyeliner out of retirement for this one (you might even want to consider wearing skinny jeans or your favorite, most over-priced, designer boutique, thrift store inspired, new yet attempting to be vintage, classic rock band t-shirt). That’s right you’re taking the L to the G train into Brooklyn. Sputnik bar is hosting an event appropriately titled "The Freak Show" tonight, Friday June 8th featuring live music, sketch comedy, as well as art of various varieties like still, live video, and live painting art (even of the body variety), and of course, the standard Brooklyn bartender dressed like a clown, topped off with a burlesque performance at the end of the evening. All proceeds of the event, oddly enough, go to Save Darfur. It’s Friday, and its time to venture out of Manhattan, get a little freaky, and go with it.

Summerstage Heats Up
Posted Friday, June 08, 2007  4:18:32 PM  by Michelle Friedman
Luckily, after the sun sets the city cools to a bearable temperature. Outdoor activities shift from the “no way in hell” category to the “sure, why not!” category. Cool off tonight with the reggae infused hip hop and R&B of Joss Stone and Common, the first show of NYC’s Summerstage series tonight! Tickets are $40 bones, but take a hint from us, you can sit right outside the designated “concert” area for free. After the show there’s the after party at Taj Lounge. Everyone who’s anyone is going. Don’t even try to get into this party with your Timberlands, we think this is going to be a much classier crowd.

Rub the Right Way
Posted Friday, June 08, 2007  11:10:36 AM  by Rachel Kurzius

A big hunk of barbequed beef a day keeps the doctor away…or at least that’s what they’re saying about the 5th Annual Big Apple BBQ Block Party. Combining America’s most iconic culinary institution with good ole’ American live music like jazz, bluegrass, blues, and rhythm and blues, the Big Apple BBQ Block Party will satiate your hunger on a number of levels. But don’t start thinking that just because it’s American it’s going to be low class; the real pit barbecue is manned by “pitmasters,” a group of the best barbecue chefs in the country. While some hail from New York, chefs at favorites like Rack & Soul, Blue Smoke, Dinosaur Bar-B-Q and the soon-to-open Hill Country, pitmaster Michael Rodriguez is coming to sizzle and sear from the world-renowned Salt Lick in Texas. Held on June 9th and 10th from noon until 6pm at Madison Square Park, the Big Apple BBQ attracts people from all over to the finger-licking good time. And just in case you want to become a pitmaster yourself (the name itself is pretty impressive), they’re holding seminars on topics like “Make Your Own Rub” in a large tented area on 24th St. Reserve your tickets for the seminars now, but the BBQ Block Party itself doesn’t require any reservations,  just growling stomachs!

M.D. In Mixology
Posted Wednesday, June 06, 2007  4:58:31 PM  by Michelle Friedman
The hot new M.D. is no longer in neurosurgery, plastic surgery, or even cosmetology. Doctors without a zest for experimentation need not apply for a position in the competitive young field of mixology, which fuses various liquors, flavors, and fruits
for a truly original taste. Rayuela, opening on Friday, promises an elaborate cocktail menu created by Senior Mixologist specializing in deliciousness, Junior Merino. Dinner promises to be just as good as drinks; New York’s first major Latin cocktail lounge has recruited Nuevo Latino chef Maximo Tejada to concoct the menu. Prepare your taste buds for surgery.

Treats Truck
Posted Wednesday, June 06, 2007  2:43:38 PM  by Michelle Friedman
If you feel jaded just walking down the dirty streets of New York City, here's something wholesome and sweet to brighten your day and bring you back to those carefree days of your youth. A new urban twist on the suburban ice cream man of your past, The Treats Truck is a mobile bakery serving up baked good staples in addition to new takes on old classics. The Treats Truck will be making its inaugural voyage into the city this weekend – in Greenwich Village on both Saturday, June 10th and Sunday, June 11th. Delectable desserts you can’t pass up? Junior Cakes – cupcakes iced on all sides and the caramel crème sandwich cookie. What could be sweeter? The treats truck isn’t just good to your sweet tooth; it’s good to the environment and runs on Compressed Natural Gas. The truck will also donate a portion of the proceeds to different charities.

For exact locations call 212.691.5226. For more information visit www.thetreatstruck.com.

Fruitilicious
Posted Tuesday, June 05, 2007  10:42:16 AM  by Kelly Dobkin
You don’t need a yacht or a sweater tied around your neck to enjoy this summery New England inspired-cocktail. Cool off with this bubbly and fruity beverage, perfect for the thermos or your next booze cruise.

Nantucket Lemonade

3 cups vodka
5 cups lemonade homemade or good-quality purchased
2 cups cranberry juice
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
2 cups ginger ale
4 cups chilled ice cubes
frozen cranberry for garnish
1 lemon slice for garnish

Combine the lemonade, cranberry juice, lime juice, and vodka in the punch bowl and mix well. Just before serving, slowly pour in the ginger ale. Add the ice cubes. Garnish with the frozen cranberries and lemon slices and serve immediately. Now that's classy!
