| Who needs the tired Milk & Honey, with its not-so-secret phone number, when there’s a whole slew of new secret bars on our fair isle? You didn’t hear it from us, but rumor has it that downtown has a lot more to offer than a bar where the men aren’t allowed to approach the ladies. Here’s a few of the best. |
 |
The Gates
Making its debut during the Tribeca Film Festival, The Gates is the newest members only spot. Only 125 of “New York City’s elite” have been issued gold swipe cards to get through the fortress like door. This joint serves up recession-unfriendly $16 cocktails. At that price who needs elitist snobbery?
Su Casa
One of the newest kids on the block, this watering hole is located above the new Qdoba Kitchen on 6 th Avenue. You you can grab a burrito on your way up the stairs to the secret cocktail den and its U-booths ( so PDT) and flat-screen tvs.
Yeah well this one’s been around since mid-December, but it’s still tightly under wraps. (Case in point: Recent events held at the former Mr. Black space have prohibited photography.) But a stealthy-taken snapshot of the place reveals the rather de rigueur retro look. The standard tin ceiling and antique cash register. The taxidermied wolf head is a tad different. Just a tad.
Rhum Rhum Room
In the spirit of living up to its name, rumors abound that this East Village bar offers 128 kinds of rum. Some digging in January revealed that the so-called boite is what the owners Joe and Nicole Desmond prefer to call their home bar. Rum aficionados are best off becoming fast friends with the Desmonds if they seek entry.
Named after the Tom Petty tune, it’s tucked under an East Village pizza shop. Whispers on the street state the space will expand with patio space. How can a spot stay secret if it can be seen from the street?
