Can anyone say “Video Killed the Radio Star”? For no clear reason, white-framed sunglasses are back in a major way, as are other ‘80s styles (thanks, Kanye). But many don’t require a major commitment to a trend—new sunglasses are one of the easiest (and often least inexpensive) ways to vary or update your look. While many of the season's sunglasses may be throwbacks—just look at the ever-popular Ray Bans and all their imitations—updates like day-glo colors and exaggerated proportions make this summer's eyewear unquestionably modern.
Risky Business
If there was one particular sunglasses style that dominated last summer, it was the classic Ray Ban Wayfarer. Vintage versions of the understated, unisex shape were a popular choice among trend-savvy celebrities, musicians, and street fashionistas, before the brand finally relaunched the style in early 2007. (Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams reportedly split their Ray Ban collection when they split.) The Wayfarer remains a safe summer pick, however standout colors like white and red (1) are commanding the spotlight this season ($140 at Sunglass Hut). For a fun spin-off, LA-based label Grey Ant offers a cheeky, exaggerated (2) take of the classic Wayfarer shape at Oak ($250).
Fly Away With Me
Another time-honored shape, the aviator, doesn't look like it's going to fade anytime soon. A worthwhile investment would be this classic, wire-rimmed pair by Marc Jacobs (3) ($95). For something a little more current, try these tortoise-shell frames from Christian Dior (4) ($265). They're actually part of a vintage collection, but the gold rim adds a nice modern touch.
I See a Pattern Bold animal-print patterns à laDynasty have been spotted making their way back into city's urban jungle. If the thought of wearing zebra makes you shudder, consider easing yourself into the trend with this inexpensive pair from Delia's (5) ($9.50). No shoulder-pads required. Neons are also making a comeback. These hot pink paint-spattered frames from Urban Outfitters (6) ($14) come with a matching rope, so you can kick back Venice-Beach-circa-mid-'80s style. (Leave your zinc sunblock at home, though.)

Sometimes bigger is better, especially when it comes to shielding your eyes—and perhaps your privacy. American Apparel (7) offers its own collection of vintage frames including this oversized retro pair, the epitome of "mom cool" ($55). Chloe's '70s-inspired super-rounded, super-sized "Mimosa" sunglasses (8) ($290 at Scoop) will make anyone's face look like a tiny Olsen's (yes, they're that huge).
VMA Fallout
Stock up on fad styles like Kanye West's "Shutter Shades" (9) and the futuristic wraparound frames that resemble rimless ski masks at Girlprops, where the $9.99 price tag won't make you feel guilty if you only wear them once or twice. There, you'll find a trove of frames in amusing shapes, from lips, to hearts, to strawberries and stars.
With so many fun, minimally-practical styles like these, you may be tempted to wear your sunglasses at night. Just don’t make us sing it.
