Unmasked: Prep Your Skin for Summer
Posted Tuesday, May 13, 2008  12:00:00 AM
Summer’s right around the corner, and you know what that means: You can’t hide problem skin under heavy foundation for much longer. (Pancake makeup does not look good at the beach—yes, we mean you, Bret Michaels.) Clean up and clear out before the warm weather’s upon us with these problem-solving masks.

Beauty Masks

It’s Hydromatic
A word of caution to the uninitiated: Be careful, because over-the-counter masks are getting more and more potent. Case in point is the bestselling Ren Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask (1) ($55), which is like a dermatologist’s skin peel in a jar. It’s not for sensitive types, but it does an amazing job of stripping away dead skin cells.

Under the Sea
Speaking of the beach, Astara’s Sea Mineral Mask (2) ($42) will transport you there with its high concentration of replenishing seaweed and algae, mixed with exfoliating jojoba beads. The smell is a little odd, but then again, if it didn’t smell weird, it wouldn’t be seaweed.

No Oil Shortage Here
If you’re feeling like your skin’s getting way too oily with the onset of humid weather, suck it up with Skinceuticals Clarifying Clay Masque (3) ($40). Kaolin and bentonite natural earth clays abolish blackheads, but soothing botanicals keep this mask from irritating even sensitive skin.

Go Deep
Another deep cleaning mask, Bliss Steep Clean (4) ($54), pumps out as two separate gels that you then mix together in the palm of your hand to activate the ingredients. Cleaning and brightening, this mask offers something for everyone.

Oxygen Bar
“Haggard” is not a good look for summer. Get out from under dull, dry skin with the instantly energizing Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask (5) ($52), another beauty of a product from the facial experts, this time formulated especially for aging skin.

Chillax
Then of course there’s the real reason we go to the beach—to de-stress! Take your skin’s stress level down a notch with the ultra calming Kiehl’s Soothing Mask (6) ($18.50), which perks up combination skin with chamomile, dandelion, and green tea extracts.
