Beauty on the Cheap: Inexpensive Products, Sales, and Giveaways
Posted Tuesday, May 13, 2008  12:00:00 AM
You’ve heard about the insanely expensive beauty products out there, but how do you get beauty on the cheap? Fortunately, consumers aren’t the only ones concerned about the dire state of the dollar these days. There are lots of beauty bargains to be found now—and inexpensive products, massive sales, and gifts with purchase make these little indulgences feel guilt-free.

Inexpensive Products, Sales, and Giveaways

Eyes Lips Face
We’re not sure why, but e.l.f. (Eyes Lips Face) is selling almost all their cosmetics for a dollar. (Don’t question, just accept.) Lip gloss, eye shadow palettes (1), mascara, makeup brushes and much more are all $1 each. This sale is so popular it crashed the brand’s server, but e.l.f. prices are also $1 on Drugstore.com.

Makeup Without Markups
How much should you pay for mascara? $20? How about $4.79 for CoverGirl’s Professional Remarkable Mascara (2)? If you’re looking for a dark pencil to create the darkly lined eyes, look no further than Maybelline’s Expert Eyes Crayon ($4.99). One of our favorite brands from childhood, Bonne Bell, is still keeping prices low enough to buy on a childhood allowance – just $3.50 for their pretty Lip Lites Lip Gloss (3) in Cappuccino. Jane Cosmetics is one of the best cheap-chic makeup brands around: Jane Lipstick (4) in Not So Innocent is only $4.49, and their bronzing powder (5) comes complete with a brush and sells for just $3.99.

Good Grooming
Who says you need to spend major dough to pamper yourself? Slough off those rough patches with SwissCo’s Pumice Stone for 99 cents, and treat your skin with St. Ives Mineral Clay Firming Mask for $3.37—it’s like getting a facial for under $5! Clean & Clear makes great products for acne-prone skin, and their Deep Action Refreshing Gel Cleanser is a bargain at $4.99.

Hair products don’t have to be super-expensive to work and make you feel pretty. Suave for Kids 2-in-1 Shampoo in Strawberry Swirl ($2.63) may be made for children, but it smells so good that you’ll never want to outgrow it. Clairol Condition 3-in-1 Mousse in Maximum Hold has long been a secret weapon in the cheap beauty expert’s arsenal—it works just as well as more expensive mousses. Dove’s Hairspray (6) in Extra Hold is one of the best on the market, and it goes for a mere $4.29.

At a Store Near You
At Bloomingdale’s, Estée Lauder is offering a free Idealist Trio Deluxe Sample Set (7) with any Estée Lauder purchase of $35 or more—and it’s not hard to find $35 worth of good stuff at the Estée Lauder counter. Lancôme may be one of the most generous brands when it comes to gifts-with-purchase. You can get a fab red-and-white striped “On the Riviera” tote (8) loaded with six sample products—including their top-performing Défencils mascara—when you spend $35.

Sure, it would be great if you could slather yourself in ReVive creams day and night, since these beauties are miracle workers, but who can afford the $400 price tag? Now you can get a free sample of ReVive Sensitif Cellular Repair Cream (9) with any ReVive purchase on NeimanMarcus.com—even Dr. Gregory Brown’s $24.95 book, About Face: A Plastic Surgeon's 4-Step Nonsurgical Program for Younger, Beautiful Skin (10).
