Shecky’s – Designer Lounge - Drop Jewels by Julia Fernandez-Pol

How did you become a designer?
I was trained in the fine arts and pursued painting, but I’ve always made jewelry, the different practices have always informed one another. It’s always been good for me to be able to explore my ideas in different formats.

What’s your inspiration?
The natural world inspires me, especially coral reefs. Structures of growth and the repetitive nature found in the natural world is my main inspiration. I love to build and sculpt the pieces, letting them grow organically as if they were alive. I just get so overwhelmed by nature’s beauty and that is reflected in my work by its apparent indulgence. My deep appreciation for materials and quality gem stones is present in my most recent collection. I also combine my innate sensibility for opulence and extravagance.

What’s your hometown?
New York

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?
You know I love it all, so that’s a tough question for me, but I do especially love the white coral pieces and the freshwater pearl cuffs. I especially like the white coral earrings that have a skeletal look. I love these because they really combine an elegant look and feel with a rocker attitude. I think that anyone who wears them embraces that part of their personality. I also love some of the more elegant and sophisticated pieces like the Mandarin earrings that combine a really wonderful mix of stones and colored wire, they really have a great structure and have a really fun and sophisticated presence.

What are you wearing right now?
Jeans and a black t-shirt with a triple ring and my favorite white coral earrings.
