How did you become a designer?
I have made clothing and accessories for as long as I can remember! I attended Columbia College, where my concentration was fashion design. After graduating I worked in the wardrobe department on many film and television productions for six years. One night I wore a pair of Pheasant Feather earrings out dancing and they were a hit with fellow party-goers. I took a couple of orders that night, and HAJI Couture was born!

What’s your inspiration?
I am heavily influenced by Eastern and African beautification rituals and adornments. I find I am most inspired when I am able to find balance in my life. I seek balance through my yoga practice and the practice of Buddhism. I am ceaselessly inspired by the beauty of natural and organic materials like feathers, ox bone, polished horn, coral, fish skin (sea leather), wood, etc.

What’s your hometown?
Chicago, IL

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?
I am in love with the Reversible AYA style earrings because the ingenious design provides the wearer with double the beauty—switching the right and left earrings to give a whole new look. Two pairs in one!

What are you wearing right now?
Miss Sixty jeans, sage, vintage v-neck sweater (circa 1978), brown vintage leather belt with brass buckle, navy blue knee high wedge-heeled boots by Fly Girl and Emerald Green HAJI Couture AYA style earrings.
