Sometimes the fashion industry can be incredibly persuasive and confusing all at once. From denim to leggings, jarring styles have made a comeback. And after our initial shock over these fashion choices, we actually start to grow fond of them. So whether our pants are slim-fit or drape-like, we’ve recently spent some time to reflect: these looks might not be as timeless as we think. 1. Shiny Pants

These probably look really nice on our petite friends, but sometimes these pants’ leg-hugging nature are a bit reminiscent of that BDSM leather suit on American Horror Story. Don’t get us started on silver or glitter leggings. When we look at them, we don’t know whether our friends are suiting up for a trip to the moon or rolled around at a Michael’s scrap-booking aisle.

2. Geometrical Prints

These prints are for scarves (sweaters at most!), not pants. Whether we’re short, tall, or average height, these geometrical patterns just cover too much real estate on our bodies!

3. Floral Prints

These can be cute. Really cute. But we can’t help but wonder if we’ll open up our closets a couple months from now and wonder why we ever purchased them in the first place. We don’t want to purchase printed pants that look like they could have been quintessential 70s sofa covers.

4. Tan Leggings

Seriously? Admit it, these make us look like we’re not wearing pants. Leggings should never have a textured appearance either. And cable-knit should only belong on sweaters.

5. Neon Pants

Perhaps this is considered fashion forward, but so are pastel-colored pants, which are much nicer and seasonal, by the way. We want to make a statement, not blind people!

Top Artist? Really? This band is nominated for a handful of awards, but have they actually produced anything decent since the early 2000s? Lead singer, Adam Levine, decided to pursue a horrible stint of acting on American Horror Story, which seemed like an odd publicity move to boost visibility. Now that he’s on the reality show The Voice, it seems that Maroon 5′s timeliness and re-emerging relevance actually worked out in the band’s favor.

Chris Brown

If this man wins Top R&B Artist (and Album!) over heavy-hitters like Usher, Alicia Keys, and Ne-Yo, our faith in the R&B industry is gone. Someone as soulful and talented as Mary J. Blige should not be placed in the same category as someone like Chris Brown. Trust us, we haven’t forgotten about his “indiscretion.” How that didn’t cause his career to plummet for good, we’ll never know.

Taylor Swift

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”– really? How complex. Perhaps it can be argued that one is never writing anything of substance unless it’s coming from a place of anguish. But how many breakups can this girl write about? She is making money because of her linear notions about breakups. We should’ve whipped out our guitars first!

Carly Rae Jepsen

We’ll admit it, “Call Me Maybe” was absolutely infectious, but does this warrant multiple nominations? Though not nearly as annoying as other artists, we’re still surprised to see her stand alongside folks like Carrie Underwood and Madonna.

The Great Gatsby is almost here (hits theaters Friday 5/10!) so we asked John Blaine, celebrity hairstylist and Creative Director of the hair care line Obliphica Professional, for tips on recreating our own 1920s hair, just in time. Here are his step-by-step instructions for creating these looks at home, using his models Dita Von Teese (renowned Queen of Burlesque) and Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson.

Dita’s Great Gatsby Coiffure

1. To get maximum shine and long lasting waves, prep the hair with a moisturizing, replenishing UV protecting shampoo and conditioner. John recommends Obliphica Professional’s Intensive Nourishing Shampoo and Hair Mask. We also love Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ($7.98) or Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner ($6 at Walgreens)

2. Mix two drops of hair serum with your favorite styling cream and evenly distribute through damp locks. This will soften the hair while adding extra shine and hold without stiff straw-like texture.

3. Blow-dry two-inch sections with a bristle round brush. Start with the under-most layers of the hair, curling the brush under the strands to create a voluminous bounce and inward curl at the ends.

4. For a more authentic process, use rollers. Take one inch sections of hair and wrap them around curling barrels no longer than 1 inch. John’s secret tip: The section of hair should never exceed the size of the rollers.

5. Starting at the front of your head and at the level of your temple, place the roller under the one-inch section and begin rolling downward toward your tips.

6. Hold in place using a bobby pin or clip, and spritz a small amount of heat activated hairspray onto the curl (We love Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Spray)

7. Repeat steps five and six with the lower layers of your hair

8. As you move toward the back of your head, begin to strategically drop the starting point of your roller to create a continuous diagonal wave

9. Once your head is crowned in rollers, set the curls by using a hairdryer on low. This will activate the hairspray for long lasting hold.

10. Gently remove the rollers one by one, beginning at the undermost layers, and apply one last light layer of hairspray for hold.

Use a bobby pin to pull back a wave or two, or pint a tight curl above the ear.

Pamela’s Pinned-Up Pinup Bouffant
