5 Unusual Ways to Eat An Avocado

The perfect summer fruit, the one that conjures thoughts of sitting on the deck and kicking it, with a best friend or two, and a delicious salt-rimmed beverage. This article started out as a bit of an ode to the creamy, buttery, vitamin-packed plant of the Lauraceae tree family in Central Mexico, but we wanted to say more than just, “Dear Avocado, Love you.” So here is a list of creative, unusual ways to use the avocado so you can avoid tossing slightly overripe ones, and figure out how to include this healthy edible into your daily summer feeding routine. Enjoy.

1. Replace cream cheese & mayo

The creamy, fatty consistency of the avocado is so deceptive. Unlike mayo and cream cheese, the fats are completely unsaturated (won’t contribute to heart disease). The fruit is also packed with fiber (also unlike dairy). You have to try it to see just how awesome it is – but next time you’re prepping a bagel for breakfast, or assembling a sandwich in the afternoon, try decorating your bread with avocado instead, to give yourself a healthy switch-up.

2. Make Ice Cream

A great dessert for mid-summer, or a Mexican-themed party. All you need to do is add sugar and cream, and put it all in the good old fashioned ice cream machine. We love this recipe.

3. Grilled, on the Barbie

Woah. What fruit or vegetable doesn’t taste better on the grill? Slice, remove the pits, brush with a little olive oil and lime juice, and throw them on the grill next to the steaks for about 5 minutes. When they’re done, add salsa to the middle and scoop out with tortilla chips.

4. Make Avocado Pudding

No joke. We tried this recently because we had our doubts, but it is a thing, and it is bomb.

5. Bake an Egg in It

We found this recipe on Lifehacker. It looks strange! But it’s the exact illustration of how versatile avocados are, and why you should obviously eat them for breakfast. That center dip the seed leaves behind is just waiting for you to fill it will scrumptious additions, from pineapple chunks, mango, tomatoes and cilantro, to yogurt or ice cream.  Try the baked egg trick here.     Wow! I love avocados. The way I learn eating avocados when I was growing up is with milk, and sugar (or ice cream), mix it or blend it as a dessert! I didn’t realized so much variety in eating them. (I need to start being creative.) Thanks! I will definitely try the last one.
