The Only Summer Makeup You Need

Mother Nature isn’t messing with our heads. This weekend was proof that summer is here. And as the weather gets warmer (and increasingly grosser) we don’t exactly imagine waking up every day to do a 15 product beauty routine. We wanna keep it light. That’s why we’ve rounded up the items that will do the job of two or more products, and keep your face as light as a freshly laundered silk nightgown rather than a pair of wool mittens, from now til September. – Cass Daubenspeck

1. Skin

Forget the foundation – eventually, it will get too hot and you’ll start to look like a Pablo Picasso painting (need we say more?). You need something that’ll dust on easily, hide imperfections, and protect skin without making it feel oily. We suggest Rimmel’s BB Cream ($34, drugstores), a no-fuss skin smoothing cream that doesn’t feel like makeup, works great for oily and combination skin, and can spread on easily like sunscreen with your (clean) fingertips. There’s also the tried-and-true bronzer compact. We like the one from Colorscience ($38) and Laura Geller ($33), because they act like a foundation-blush combo, giving contour to the face while adding coverage and a sun-kissed glow.

2. Eyes

Eyeliner and smoky eyeshadow can be kept on the dresser for date nights and special occasions, but when we’re talking about everyday summer beauty essentials, waterproof mascara can’t be missed. It won’t smudge when you’re out running errands after a long day at work, it won’t drip when you’re on the beach, and it won’t keep you from engaging in impromptu summer activities because you weren’t prepared (who knows when you might be beckoned to jump into a pool with all your clothes on?). We’re going with Maybelline’s Great Lash waterproof mascara ($6.40, drugstores) n Very Black, because it’s never failed us (and the deep color makes our eyes pop even without eyeliner). Also, Almay Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover Pads ($5.50, drugstores) are necessary for nighttime removal.

3. Lips

Dark and bold are for the cold. A touch of color on lips and cheeks- like pinks and berries – go a long way to make a summer face perfectly fresh, glowing, and youthful. We absolutely recommend a two-in-one stick that you can smudge on lips and then dab on the apples of cheeks for enough color to set off your eyes. The Josie Maran Argan Color Stick is a long-time favorite (in Rosy, $22) or the Nars Multi-Purpose Stick (in Orgasm or Riviera, $39). With this in tow, you’re good to go. Beach, backyard bbq, and off to work every day.  Hello, fresh faced beauty.
