10 Child Stars Who Didn’t Turn Into Hot Messes

Christian Bale

That on-set freak-out aside, Welsh actor Christian Bale transitioned well between being the star of Stephen Spielberg’s 1987 war epic Empire of the Sun to being Christopher Nolan’s go-to guy to bring Batman, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t struggle with adjusting to fame just like other child stars. Unlike other child actors who let that mounting pressure swallow them whole, Bale kept chugging on through the ’90s, staying far away from the temptations and pitfalls of Hollywood by focusing on roles in Newsies, Little Women and Velvet Goldmine. The focus paid off—the Academy Award-winning actor is now a consistent critical and commercial success, acting in everything from action movies like The Dark Knight and Terminator Salvation to acclaimed dramas like The Fighter. Nowadays, the only time we see this talented actor in the tabloids is when he’s visiting the victims of the Aurora shooting or flying a 4-year-old Batman fan suffering from cancer out to Disneyland to hang out with him. Can you say awwww?!

I had no idea Katherine Heigl was a child star! Actually, i haven’t really cared for her much. Nothing against her, just not my favorites. After reading this, though, I definitely have much more respect and admiration for her and her work!

It’s nice to know some people act like real people in Hollywood.

What about Kirk Cameron? He probably turned out better than any of the child actors.

Yes, it would be nice if you showed a little more diversity in this list. More research people.

The problem is the news likes to focus on the negative. I would guess that the majority of childhood stars have “gone good” but you only hear about the bad ones over and over and over again. This list should be “100 child stars who didn’t turn into hot messes.”

Natalie Portman should be on this list! From “Leon: The Professional” to “Black Swan” with a degree from Harvard in between.

How about a little diversity here? There is also Raven Simone, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Tatiana Ali, Bernadette Stanis, Janet Jackson to name a few.
