Game of Thrones

Are you and your friends a bunch of fantasy fiends? Then you likely love HBO’s hit “Game of Thrones.” If that’s the case, gather up ye bannermen, direwolves and dragons for an affair straight out of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros—minus all of the beheading, of course!

Decor: Get ready to get a little medieval! Hang house banners touting the four main families of “Game of Thrones”—the Starks, the Lannisters, the Targaryens and the Baratheons—and have your guests represent their favorite house as their “bannermen” for drinking or trivia games (we definitely don’t want to be in the scheming Lannister corner!). Use printed maps of mystical Westeros as placemats on your table (again, a plastic tablecloth will keep everything in place), give everyone a paper crown (after all, it seems like everyone and their father is a king on “GOT”!), or go for a snowy all-white color scheme in homage to the Starks’ signature saying, “Winter is coming.”

Drinks: Fill up “GOT”-worthy goblets high with hearty ales and full-bodied wines (mulled or spiced wine is also a great option!) that would fuel the fire of a dragon. If you really want to go all out, you can serve up some Traditional Mead, a wine fermented from honey, not grapes, which makes many an appearance in the show. Instead of having individual ice cubes, you can put out one large chunk of ice as a nod to “The Wall” in the North and have your guests (carefully!) chip off pieces as needed for their drinks.

Dishes: It’s unlikely that you’ll have hunks of mutton in your freezer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dish out a spread fit for a king (or villainous queen—we’re looking at you Cersei!). Epicurious has a wonderful “Game of Thrones”-themed family-style feast featuring Cupcake-Tin Pork Pie, Vidalia Onion Tarts, Aroma Bread with Coriander and Fennel, and Lemon Tea Cakes, all of which would satisfy even a seemingly insatiable glutton like King Robert Baratheon!
