5 Fun TV Themes for an Emmy Viewing Party
Mad Men

Swing into the scandalous ’60s with a “Mad Men”-themed Emmys soiree, complete with martinis and Manhattans, midcentury-worthy munchies, plenty of hairspray and, if it’s a real authentic “Mad Men” bash, loads of ignoring the kids and waiting for Don to come home.
Decor: Twist your hair into a bouffant, slick on some winged liner and zip up a va-va-voom vintage frock that would make Joan Hollaway proud. The easiest way to turn your 2012 pad into a midcentury marvel is by having the whole party break out their ’60s best—skinny ties and slick silver suits for the lads and full-skirted, waist-nipped frocks for the ladies. Get rid of all signs of the modern times (okay, your flatscreen TV can stay—hey, you need something to watch the Emmys on!) in favor of retro touches like vintage typewriters, rotary phones or old magazine issues (scour flea markets or grandma’s attic). Obviously, the bar area is super important, so stock up on retro-inspired shakers, martini pitchers and cocktail glasses.
Drinks: Speaking of the bar, if you want to stay authentic, pick up a few bottles of Canadian Club whiskey (Don’s tipple of choice) and Old Overholt rye (which Mr. Draper used in place of bourbon to make Old-Fashioneds on the show). Classic cocktails like an Old-Fashioned, Dirty Martini, Manhattan or a Whiskey Sour are all era-appropriate. Along with the booze, outfit the bar with cocktail olives, maraschino cherries, lemons, limes, bitters and plenty of ice for on-the-rock ‘tails.
Dishes: Channel your inner Betty Draper-style hostess with the mostess and whip up a bunch of ’60s-worthy appetizers, like deviled eggs, crudite and dip, shrimp cocktail, chicken kebabs and mini meatballs. For a retro-inspired dessert, you can whip up a batch of mini bundt cakes or wow your guests with an old-school Jell-O mold!
