Downton Abbey

Want to throw a fancy period piece Emmys viewing party? PBS hit “Downton Abbey” is the TV party theme for you! Take your guests back to Edwardian Britain with an Emmys bash that even the dowager countess couldn’t look down on!

Decor: Break out your fancy dress, elbow-grazing gloves and a show-stopping large-brimmed hat to look the part of a “Downton Abbey” dame, perfect to match an English tea party-inspired decor, complete with plenty of doilies and fine china. Add nods to the UK like mini Union Jack flags and touches of British royalty by giving each guest a Queen-worthy tiara or crown.

Drinks: The obvious beverage of choice for your “Downton Abbey” bash is properly prepared English tea, but if you’re looking for more spirited sips, you can’t go wrong with the Queen’s drink of choice, a classic Gin & Tonic, or a Pimm’s Cup, popular in jolly ol’ England. And if you want to salute Dame Maggie Smith’s dowager countess herself, Violet Crawley, there’s no more proper potable than some fortified wine like sherry or brandy. Drinking game alert: take a sip every time Smith delivers one of her signature cutting quips!

Dishes: Three words: fancy finger foods! Think typical tea party fare like crumpets, scones, crust-less cucumber sandwiches and a selection of British cheeses and biscuits. Want to have a “Downton” sit-down dinner party? Break out your fork, knife and spoon (your best silver, of course) for Creamy Watercress Soup, steak and Guinness pie and Molded Apple Charlotte for dessert. The finishing touch? A butler to serve it all—kidding!
