How do you possibly top ripping off all of your clothes to the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” and sexily segueing into “Oops I Did It Again” in nothing but a sheer bodysuit with strategically placed rhinestones? You wrap yourself in a bright yellow boa constrictor, obviously! Britney Spears did just that at the 2001 Video Music Awards, channeling the steamy sexuality of her “I’m A Slave 4 U” video as she fearlessly slinked around onstage with a live seven-foot albino python named Banana wrapped around her shoulders. The very image of Spears and that snake instantly catapulted the singer from pop princessdom to pop legend.
