Dress By The Decade: Retro Looks For Every Era

As women’s fashion continues to evolve, every season brings the return of an old trend, and this season is no different. From the delicately decorated flapper numbers of the roaring ’20s, to the body-conscious bombshell frocks of the ’40s, to neon-covered ’80s gear, every era had its signature style, but no matter what the standard, we sartorial ladies know just how to make even the most retro styles look fresh. With these decades-spanning looks, you can go from 1930′s glam to 1990′s grunge without stepping into a time machine—all you have to do is step into your own closet!

The Roaring ’20s

Between Boardwalk Empire, The Artist and the upcoming The Great Gatsby, 1920′s fashion has been getting a whole lot of spotlight lately. The ultra feminine beaded silks and lace, along with the sexy yet covered up drop waist, are looks that we will hold onto forever. To take it back to the Prohibition days of speakeasies, flappers and swing, keep an eye out for a drop waist silhouette and loads of intricate detail work. Slip on a slinky Embellished Hanky Hem Dress ($167 from misselfridge.com) and add a sparkling necklace like this Cath Kidson Antique Silver Sparkle Necklace ($58 from asos.com),  or if you just want a touch of ’20s glamour, throw on this bejeweled ASOS Beaded Caplet ($24.86 from asos.com) on top of a plain tee. Don’t forget your finger waves and a wine red lip and you’re ready to swing the night away!

The ’40s and ’50s choices were my favorite. I love ’60s fashions, but not the dress suggested here.

As someone who grew up in the 80s and early 90′s, I’m offended by the 90′s pick. They’re on the money with the jeans, but the only time I ever saw an outfit like the one on TAT is in that very picture, haha! Where are the shoulder strap dresses with the white baby tees underneath? Or carpenter pants! Oh memories…

THANK YOU! That outfit is horrible and I never saw anyone wearing that! And suggesting high-waisted jeans? Ugh!
