Did Scientology Ruin Their Relationship?

Yesterday, the Tinseltown super couple formerly known as TomKat reached a settlement agreement after the news of Katie Holmes’s filing for divorce from hubby Tom Cruise after five years of marriage shocked the world last month. Speculation over the couple’s break-up reached a fever pitch these past few weeks, with one word seemingly on everyone’s tongue: Scientology. Yes, Cruise is just one of many Hollywood elite who pledge allegiance to L. Ron Hubbard and his body of beliefs, and rumors have circulated that the reason Holmes pulled the sneak-a-roo split from her husband while he was away shooting in Iceland was because the actress didn’t want daughter Suri to get pulled into the church’s grasp. True or not, this wouldn’t be first time the controversial faith has had some role in a Hollywood break-up!

Tom & Katie

They met, fell in love, jumped on couches and got hitched in a whirlwind romance in 2005. Seven years later, the flame flickered out and it reportedly wasn’t an extramarital tryst or too much time spent away from each other that marred the marriage like countless other celeb couplings—it was Scientology. Tom Cruise is one of Scientology’s most high-profile practitioners and when the twosome started becoming serious, the Catholic-bred Holmes took on the faith as well. Fast-forward a few years and now rumor has it that Holmes didn’t want six-year-old daughter Suri to get entangled in the church’s web, filing for sole legal custody so that she alone has say in Suri’s religious upbringing. Neither side will fess up to the true cause of the split or Scientology’s role in it, but interestingly enough, quickly after filing for divorce from Tom, Katie returned to the Catholic Church, registering in NYC where she bought an apartment for her and Suri. Curious, eh?
