We don’t know if it’s the heat or the sense of freedom that comes with summer, but something about the summertime makes us want to act just a little bit bad. The incomparable Mae West once said “When I’m good, I’m very good. But when I’m bad, I’m better,” and her now-famous quote perfectly sums up our feelings about some of the world’s most infamous bad girls. Sure, it’s nice to see stars like Angelina Jolie and Shannen Doherty all reformed and on the straight-and-narrow now, but really, we all know we liked them better when they were letting their bad girl flag fly high. Take cues from these bold Hollywood bad girls and get your bad on this summer, ladies!

The Material Girl is so devoted to her decades-spanning bad girl persona, she even wrote a song about it! Long before Katy Perry kissed a girl and liked it, before Lady Gaga writhed on top of a piano, her Madgesty was making out with Britney and Christina, lighting crucifixes on fire much to the horror of the Catholic Church, humping the stage in a wedding dress to the tongue-in-cheek “Like a Virgin” and putting out such sexually explicit music videos that MTV had to ban them from the network. And don’t think age has slowed this entertainer extraordinaire down one bit from her anti-establishment ways—Madge recently shocked the world yet again when she flashed her bare breast to the crowd at a concert in Istanbul. Yeah, we have a feeling there are decades of more bad girl behavior to come with this one!
