We know, for a second, we thought it was summer vacation too, but with Memorial Day weekend gone and yet another work week winding in front of us, we’ve got to get our mind back in business mode. Instead of dwelling over lazy days long gone, why not re-energize your working girl spirit with some inspiration from TV’s most fabulous career girls? From iconic independent women like The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s Mary Richards to the ballsy ad babes from Mad Men, these smart, stylish and successful ladies will give you just the boost you need to conquer that cubicle once again!

Mary Richards

Turn the world on with your smile by taking a page from one of TV’s original career girls, Ms. Mary Richards from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. No, don’t joyfully fling your beret in the air (frankly, you’ll look a bit nuts), but you can steal some of TV’s first ever non-married, independent working woman’s signature sweetness and that Lou Grant-approved spunk! Working at the TV station WJM, Mary works her way up to producer by the show’s end and looks fabulous every step of the way, in ’70s-style double-breasted coats, knee-high boots and, of course, her blue tam!

Yes, I love most of these women! Whenever I watch Mad Men it makes me want to return to corporate life. Even though most of the scenarios are unrealistic (especially Rachel on Friends!), it’s still inspiring. Noticed you left out Nancy Botwin of Weeds…haha ;)

Great choices of strong, successful careerwomen!

And in terms of style, each really showcases the decade during which the show had its run: Cosby in the ’80s, Ally McBeal in the ’90s, SATC in the ’00s…

My favorite are the Mad Men clothes though – I covet them! ;)

Gotta love Jane on Drop Dead Diva. And where is Liz Lemon on this list? Pam from The Office is really fab too. Lorealie Gilmore and Sookie on Gilmore Girls.

Jumping in with btho to add to the Liz Lemon love. For the sometimes-shlubby-but-still-fabulous nerd girls (and those who depend on their glasses), or anyone who feels like the one sane person in the world, Liz Lemon is THE working woman on TV. (and… the woman on TV whose style mine is most likely to emulate…)

As much as I love a strong and empowered women in the workplace character, i can not identify with Ally Mcbeal.I think of all the shows listed that one really grated on my nerves which is sad because i’m a Boston girl and i love when shows take place in my hometown.

I wish i could dress up for work,i’m required to wear a uniform of a poly/wool blend…not attractive.

  • OohLaLovie:

heck, i miss dressing up for an office. Working at home has its drawbacks sometimes!
