You made a decision, now what?

When mixing your relationship with your relatives, be as prepared as possible. Ensure that all important background info has been exchanged with both parties (your fam and your fella). Don’t spring the annual family mountain climb on your significant other, or your tattooed boyfriend on your ultra-conservative family. If you give people time to mentally prepare, it will go much more smoothly.

Be on your best behavior if you’re spending the holidays with his fam.

Mind your manners. Offer to help with the dishes or cooking. Stick to light, neutral conversation topics (no religion, politics, etc.). Make a good impression—in the future, you could be calling these folks family, too!
