Snappy Responses to Your Relatives’ Annoying Questions

Do you hear what I hear? Why, yes—it’s an annoying question from a friend or family member at your annual holiday dinner! While this season is supposed to be filled with joy, nothing can suck the fun out of opening gifts and eating yummy food like a question about your less-than-stellar love life or job.

Poor Uncle Steve may think he’s making conversation, but the fact that you and your boyfriend are in a rough patch right now is really none of his business! So the next time someone throws out a nosy inquiry that makes you want to smash a gingerbread house, use one of these snappy, sarcastic responses.

-Samantha Sutton

“How’s work?”

It’s called work for a reason, so unless your job is testing bouncy castles, chances are it’s not always a joy to wake up at the crack of dawn, and you probably don’t want to be thinking mid-meal about all those emails awaiting you once you return from break. Plus, Aunt Sally probably could care less that you stayed until 11 finishing a project last week. Here are some options you can respond with…

“I’m thinking of quitting and becoming a Kardashian. Rob’s not married so I still have a chance!”

“I’ve lost 10 pounds from surviving on ramen, my eye strain has finally warranted a prescription set of serious-looking glasses and walking my boss’ crazy poodle has really tightened my glutes. I can’t complain!”

Although most of these answer are a bit too rude to actually use, it was fun to read them. You forgot my favorite question though: When are you planning on having a baby?

I’ll definitely take the sarcastic advice for whenever I get together with relatives. I don’t like being asked a bunch of personal questions from people that don’t share their own business.

I think these are just plain rude. If someone is going to all the trouble of trying to make a conversation with you the least you can do is not talk down to them but smile and give them a short but sweet answer. Then ask them some questions and be a listener then you don’t have to try to come up with a rude snappy reply to any questions that are asked no matter how annoying you may find them.

We are not talking about a random person or passing acquaintance. We are talking about family members.

I think that usually the ppl asking you these questions are ppl that you wouldn’t mind answering them from… that said there are always the nosey ppl that deserve a little snip.

While some of these questions may be annoying it is important to remember that they are usually asked with the best of intentions and usually only asked as conversation starters. We should not be so easily offended and all work at making the world a kinder place. That begins by not thinking the worst. A better option would be to ask the person about themselves, rather than some nasty hurtful comment. Not cool Sheckys.

Missy, the mere fact that these questions are perceived as annoying, and so many other respondents agree, shows how much these alleged family members don’t actually know anything about the person being questioned! Believe me, I have heard ‘em all. And if I had a nickel for every time I heard “…but he/she means well…” then I wouldn’t have to deal with the job search question. Chill out, let us have a laugh, it lowers our blood pressure.

Ahhh…the “niceness” police. Some of us just sling the arrows because it’s our God-given right. Some people really do need it!

I agree w/ you. I think these are way too nasty for family. I don’t know who talks to their ‘loved’ ones like this but I would like to think it’s not most of us. I do think taken a bit more seriously/nicer these are good questions to have good ‘neutral’ answers to, b/c they are asked way too much.
