Wedding Traditions: New, Old and Over

1 2 3 4

There are some traditions that have stood the test of time and some that are starting to get nixed from modern weddings. Which ones should stay and which should go? And what new one should you add? Check it out here!

OVER IT: Stopping the music for silly stuff.

More and more weddings are opting to omit traditions that interrupt the flow of the reception. My wedding planner simply stated, “if you think it’s cheesy, then chances are, others do too.” Oftentimes, once the toasts have been made, the spotlight dance is over and dinner is done, it’s very difficult to get folks off the dance floor to stop and watch the groom begrudgingly take the stage to stick his hand up the bride’s dress for the garter toss.

As for throwing the bouquet, it’s somewhat of a challenge nowadays to find single ladies eager to catch a bouquet in hopes of being the next Mrs. Something (Women’s Lib, what?!). And finally, many modern weddings are opting for dessert buffets or other alternatives to the typical wedding cake and traditional cake cutting. Again, another thing to stop the music for…and who wants a bunch of frosting all over their face after getting their makeup professionally done?

i like traditional with a little bit of personality, and yea some traditions are cheesy but so what. your wedding is something thats supposed to happen only once so if the bride or groom wants to add something different to THEIR wedding that theyre paying for then so be it

doesn’t matter if its tradition or not, as long as you will enjoy it…

Absolutely agree w/#1, cake-smashing is juvenile. Not one wedding I’ve attended at which this was done has lasted.

#3: for a fun comparison, check out “You Can Wear It Again: A Celebration of Bridesmaids’ Dresses” by Meg Mateo Ilasco. I receive absolutely zero dollars for this recommendation. You can find ‘em super cheap at used booksellers online.

Oh god, no more “surprise booty” dance. This has gotten old really fast. I like the idea of the wedding party surprising the couple!

Love the non traditional wedddings. Weddings that make everyone even grandma get up and dance is a success.

I like the fun entrance songs and choreographed dances! Skip the garter and flower toss and the cake cutting and go with the dessert buffet and chocolate fountain! I love the new photo booths – everyone can have fun and take home memories from the wedding!

I am getting married next year and I already told my bridesmaid and maid of honor the color of their dress that I want but the style is up to them. I do like the tradition with a little bit of modern touch.

I gave my bridesmaids the option of having different dresses and they all ended up choosing the same one! They tried on a bunch and the one they all got looked the best on them so they decided to all wear it. Now for shoes, they all got different shoes so there was non-traditional piece!

do away with matching bride’s maids dresses/hairsytles & makeup. Everyone is different and as a bride’s maid as long as you follow color protocal I think you’ll be fine. Same color different style dress/ shoes/ makeup and also jewelry.

I like the idea of different bridesmaid dresses. The different styles and sizes can accomodate all of your bridesmaids and everyone’s happy.

I agree with the matching dresses. there isn’t one style that flatters everyone.

I agree with #4 totally! I don’t think it’s just about the choreographed dance, I think the point is planning ahead the dance even if it’s the spot light dance… I agree, I think it’s super awkward and boring to watch the bride and groom “wobble back and forth”… it’s weird and it’s such an easy thing to do to take a class and actually dance.

Sort of funny bc back then I bet you the couple would know how to waltz or something but since we don’t know how to dance properly these days, it’s like an old tradition come to life!

Ideas and tradition change with age. As for me I rather stick to the same color and yet different styles in dresses.

Choreographed dancing at weddings is not my thing. Then again, I doubt anyone in my future bridal party would want to partake. Maybe I’m just envious on the inside…

#4 – a little cheezy. The whole flash mob thing is kinda dorky in my opinion. Reminds me of the chicken dance
