5 Fast Ways to Upgrade Your Hair

So, the summer left your hair damaged from swimming, sunning and funning, and now you’re not sure what to, er, do, with it now that’s it really fall? Natasha Sunshine of L.A.’s Byu-Ti Salon has some quick and easy tips and tricks. Choose from four salon fixes and one at-home treatment.

1. Grab a great conditioning treatment…

It may sound simple, but a once-a-week at-home mask can do wonders to nourish dry hair. Try Pureology’s Perfect 4 Reconstruct Repair ($32 on Ulta.com) in the shower. Leave on five minutes and follow up with Pureology’s Perfect 4 Platinum Miracle Filler ($24 on Ulta.com).

What’s the secret? Perfect 4 Platinum has a star ingredient called Keravis, which is a plumping protein that fills in hair’s gaps and makes your strands supple and super shiny. It may say it’s only for blondes, but it’s actually suitable for all hair colors!

2. Try “Sustainable Highlights”…

At our salon, we call a highlight with 16 foils or less a Sustainable Highlight. You’ll get a great pop of color or brightness without all the maintenance. Great for the gal who is short on time and/or cash!

3. Snag bold bangs…

Be daring and go blunt for fall with sharp, thick bangs. The style is sultry, timeless, and looks great with hair up or down. The cut is best on face shapes that are oval.

4. Snip a little bit off the bottom…

Trimming is like taking your daily vitamin. It doesn’t seem like a whole lot is going on—but over time the benefits add up. Hair that is trimmed regularly gets less split ends, is less dry and just looks healthier, so don’t skimp on your 6-8 week trim.

5. Add a li’l layering…

Feeling kind of blah? Ask your stylist to add some layers to your cut for a pop of volume, movement and health. It’s great way to get rid of dead hair without losing length and, honestly, no one but a 10-year-old should have long one-length hair.

Great tips!! I definitely need to get mine cut soon, it’s been too many months – eek!! My hair recently thinned out due to some thyroid issues, so I think I may have to get some layers or something to give it more volume. (I just don’t want it to get frizzy – ie. if they razor cut it – or whatever that term is – bad haircut right there!) any tips? My hair is really long, curly/wavy. (:

Hi Ladies- Thanks for all the great feedback!

I wanted to comment on Leesh805 and say, as a darker brunette, you absolutely don’t have to go blonde to get beautiful highlights. The next time you see someone withe the kind of color you love, ask her where she had it done. The right stylist can get you there without taking you blonde which will ultimately cause a lot of damage over time.

Secondly, when it comes to bangs, take some time and do your research. If you’re afraid to commit to a full on fringe try a side swept bang – they grow out really well!

    Good luck! xx

I was JUST thinking about getting some highlights like Kim Kardashian did a while ago. I have dark brown hair so it is hard for color to show through unless I do blonde (which I’ve been there, done that back in high school lol). So I’m hoping to find a great hairdresser who can do brown highlights. I think it’s time I also bought a once a week conditioner as well to help my hair have that extra oomph going into the winter months!

I did 4 and 5 this weekend and my hair looks much more healthy now. All the dry ends are cut off.

If you are thinking about bangs you better be very committed, because they take a long time to grow back out and they don’t look good on everyone. Same thing with layers, I can’t seem to get my hair back to one length and I have been trying to for a longgg time. I love highlights tho, dimension in the hair looks beautiful.

I just got bangs and I love them. It’s something different and really doesn’t take much maintenance – just a few minutes to blow-dry and style them. Next on my list is a good trim and some more layers.
