Surprising Household Deodorizers

Icky smells around my apartment put me in the foulest of moods. Whether it’s a mysterious scent from the fridge or the musty smell of damp linens, I just want to throw everything out and start fresh. Lucky for me, Real Simple has compiled a list of eight surprisingly effective household deodorizers that will not only save me the hassle (and cost) of buying new stuff, but may already be in your kitchen cabinet!

If your food container reeks of old leftovers and you can’t beat the stench, not to fear! Just soak your plastic-wear overnight in warm water and baking soda, and place a mixture of one teaspoon powdered mustard and one quart warm water in those glass jars.

For a moldy-smelling basement, cut an onion in half and leave it on a plate downstairs overnight. After the smell of onion dissipates, you’ll find all those subterranean stenches will have vanished, too!

I love vintage clothing, but sometimes they can smell musty and, well, vintage. To kick the odor, spritz vodka (seriously!) onto your garments. It will kill bacteria and dry without leaving a scent. Just make sure you spot test first!

Vinegar leaves a smell of it’s own, and it’s not pleasant. I recently bought an apartment, and the previous owners trying to leave it clean, used vinegar to mop . It took me weeks to get rid of the smell. I used fabreeze to remove it.

I don’t have any of the smelly issues stated here so I can’t put any of the tips given to use. thanks though for the new info. I might pass it along to the people who I know deal with these types of problems.

Vinegar is great at removing musty smells and is a natural anti-bacteria agent great for cleaning too. I’ve heard the onion trick before but not the vodka.

I haven’t heard of any of those before, but we have been having problems with one of our cat’s not wanting to use the litterbox. Someone informed us that equal parts water and white vinegar will remove the smell better than any deodorizer we can buy at the pet store.
