I’m a Girl…and I Like Video Games
Today, we’re celebrating our Always-Logged-On Girlfriends (have you voted in our National Girlfriend Awards yet?), so imagine our surprise when we heard that one of our very own Shecky’s Staffers was into…video games. And this Staffer is a girl (we already knew about the obsession guys have with gaming, duh!). Read her story, and tell us if you’re a gamer girl or if you’d rather leave the joystick to the gentlemen.
It all started back in middle school when everyone (girls included) would rush home from school and turn on their old-school Super Nintendo or Nintendo 64. I was always the queen of slipping my opponent the ol’ banana peel in Mario Kart. I even ventured over to GoldenEye where I could sharp-shoot whoever dared challenge me from across the Stacks with my DD44 Distovel. But alas, after about eighth grade, girls seemed to move on from gaming and guys just started getting more into it. So, what was a game-lovin’ girl to do?
I went against the grain and kept playing. Today, I still love going back to my old favorites, and with Wii, I can now play a newer version of Mario Kart (I still rock) complete with a steering wheel. I also love jamming out with Guitar Hero or banging some drums for Rock Band. I even went through a phase where I played NFL Blitz 2000 (or was it 2001?).
But now, my favorite video game is…Call of Duty. Yep, this macho “man-only” game is totally up my alley…it’s like GoldenEye x100. So, how did I get into it? During my senior year of college, I decided that since all of my guy friends were playing it, I should get in on the action, too. Since I’d never had a Playstation or Xbox, adapting to the different controllers was a major challenge. It took me about a month to even walk and look in the right directions. Eventually, I started to suck less and less at this wartime game (even when I wasn’t good, it didn’t stop me from talking smack to my opponents via headset!). By the last few months of college, I was able to impress dudes (bonus!) with my love of the game…and impress them even more when they saw me play it.
Now, my video gaming skills are a great topic of conversation (I got Black Ops for Christmas) and I can join my man (or he can join me) when either of us wants to play COD. So, this common interest allows us to spend time together! For those girls who aren’t very good at VGs, why not make a drinking game out of them? Be rewarded with booze for your blunders! Or, use video games as a fun way to exercise with Wii or Xbox Kinect. Don’t let the guys get all the gaming glory, and don’t ream them out for some immature obsession…video games are actually really, really fun. Oh, and don’t forget—Modern Warfare 3 is coming out in November. Score!
Girl Talk Time: Do you still play video games? What are your favorites? What are your thoughts on a girl who’s into video games? Or, are you baffled by your man’s interest?

Post a CommentVideo games can be fun, but everything has it’s proper place!!!
i love playing my xbox360. i actually met my boyfriend online while playing a racing game. my favorite game right now is gears of war. I actually enjoy staying up alll night playing video games. oh, by the way me and him have been together now for about 5 years
I can’t play many video games due to motion sickness – even Spyro, that cute little flying dragon makes me want to hurl breakfast! But I found MMORPGs and I’m addicted to Evony!
i like C.O.D. too! i cant play it as much as my husband (hours and hours) but its definitely something to do on those rainy dreary days, or when we’re snowed in. One weekend we didnt leave the bed (only to shower.. eat.. and um.. you know) and beat the halo game on campaign!
my boyfriend likes me to play with him. its something we can do together
Love COD, and wi games!
I have always loved video games and still do!! My boyfriend doesn’t seem to mind at all!
I’ve always loved playing video games and I have a family of gamers. I like the older classics like all the Nintendo consoles. I’ve also enjoyed playing my son’s games on the 360 like Gears of War and the new Mortal Kombat (my fave). And my hubby plays Battlefield and COD on the PC.
The only one’s i’ve played was Grand Theft Auto & little big planet. I leave the rest to my man lol
I love video games… my xbox, wii, or even the Super Nintendo once in a while
I love my video games! The Wii and my old school Nintendo both get use! And I do well at a few games, and better than the hubs sometimes!
The only video games I play are the dance games and the Wii sports stuff. The Wii sports are only when I have friends over and the dance games are for exercise.
THERE IS NO SET RULE THAT GAMES ARE JUST FOR MEN/BOYS, GIRLS CAN KICK SERIOUS *** TOO. MY KIDS PLAY ALL THE TIME, I JUST THINK THERE A LITTLE TO COMPLACATED TO ME. I GET REALLY NERVOUS PLAYING, BUT I PLAY A MEAN GUITAR HERO, ALL HAIL ROCK AND ROLL
IF YOU LIKE TO PLAY, CARRY ON AND KICK SOME MEN ***
I’m not really a video gamer…I play once in a blue.
I don’t really play games. I get bored after I’ve reached a certain level
I played games for a long time with older systems (atari, nintendo- old school). I love games and don’t mind playstation or xbox, but I recently almost broke up with my BF b/c COD became is LIFE. Everything revolved around that alternate reality and he allowed it to take over. At this stage, it is not healthy and playing with them is only enabling them. For that reason is why I think you need to assess the situation before you dive into gaming with someone you love who may love the game more than everything & everyone else around them.
i like games, a lot, but I just don’t have the time to play them anymore
