Embarrassing Family Mishaps

As they say, “You can pick your nose, you can pick you friends but you can’t pick your relatives,” which is why relative-related embarrassing moments are even more hilarious than your usual garden-variety mishaps. Whether it’s dad’s questionable fashion choices, mom’s out-of-touch questions or your not-so-sweet sister’s revenge tactics, there’s always a funny family story to tell. See our embarrassing family moments below and don’t forget to tell us why SHE is your Best Family Girlfriend in the National Girlfriend Awards Presented by Shecky’s!

“My sister and I never really got along. One of the main reasons was that she constantly took my clothes without putting them away afterwards or lent them to one of her friends without my knowledge. To teach her a lesson, I also started using and lending her clothes out to my friends in hopes that she would realize how frustrating it was and stop doing it! One day, she decided it was payback time. It was the day of my high school graduation. I was excited and relieved that high school was finally done and over with.

Finally, I was in the car and on the way to graduation! Unbeknownst to me, my loving sister had planted a plate full of ketchup and gravy on the seat. (My graduation gown was pearl white.) Since I was so nervous and excited, I didn’t notice it. But as I was walking down the aisle, my friend walking behind me asked if I had my period. I knew exactly what  had happened and ran to the bathroom totally embarassed. I took my gown off to rinse it and found the ketchup and gravy! I was furious! The stain wouldn’t budge, so I decided to go without my gown. I walked back to the ceromony with all eyes on me and a couple of giggles. I will never forget my high school graduation day thanks to my sweet sister.”

“My mom is normally not very klutzy, but on one family vacation in Hawaii she just kept hurting herself! First, she fell down when playing in the ocean and got a black eye and a scrape on her forehead, then she LITERALLY punched herself in the eye after trying to open a stuck backpack. By the end of the trip, she had two black eyes, scratches all over her face, and bruises up and down her legs. It looked like we had been beating her up the entire trip.”

“My dad is famous for mis-matching things, especially on vacation. Think: tie-dyed Pink Floyd shirt, camo shorts, sandals with socks and red Disney World visor. I don’t know how he packs…I guess he just throws whatever into his suitcase! Gotta love those outfits caught on camera at the Civil War monuments we travel to.”

“Let’s just say a family trip to Germany got super awkward when Dad started insisting that everyone taste his amazing sausage….”

“There isn’t too much ethnic variety on Australia’s Gold Coast, so coming to visit me in NY was a real eye-opener for my mum. Unfortunately, most of her thoughts on this situation came right out of her mouth, as opposed to staying in her head where they probably should have stayed. One embarrassing example? She couldn’t help but strike up conversations with African-American women on the subway about how amazing the braids in their hair were.”

“Recently, my cousin’s five-year-old boy dressed me up as a ‘girl’ pirate. This involved me fashioning a beard and mustache out of my long hair and donning a pirate hat, sword and having a monkey on my shoulder. Whenever I tried to take my ‘beard’ off he would get upset, so I stayed like that for quite some time and also engaged in sword fights and walking the plank. Now I know what it feels like to be a birthday clown, but hey, it made him so happy!”

You can always laugh about it later. That’s what keeps us from killing each other.

I gladly only have brothers who were more into protecting me than pulling pranks. Although there were a couple times my dad came out in his tighty whiteys when he thought no one was around. xD

My family is really cool but my Dad is a total goofball and can say the dumbest things! We were at Sea World and there were a school from Jersey (where we live) on a trip there. We were waiting on line to get something to eat and there were these two young girls in front of us. Loudly my Dad goes so you girls from Jersey. They looked at him in horror and said North Ireland actually. We almost died!

I loved this article! I thought it was just me! My extended family is a bit crazy. I seriously would’ve killed my sister if she had done that to me on my graduation day. It would’ve been payback time for her. ;-)
