Shecky’s

Today marks the start of the 2011 National Girlfriend Awards presented by Shecky’s AND National Girlfriends Day. In celebration of the two, we thought we’d share a few “best things my best friend ever did for me” moments. Read below and don’t forget to tell us who SHE when you nominate for the National Girlfriend Awards.

“When I was a freshman in college, I totally hippied out and decided it was time for me to have dreadlocks. My best friend spent hours holed up in my room with me, twisting my hair, teasing it and getting my tresses perfectly divided into even, twisted, knotted sections, which would lock into matted dreads within days.

After hours of work, my hair was finally finished. I looked in the mirror and nearly burst into tears. I looked ridiculous! What was I thinking!? Thank goodness my same girlfriend was there to spend another five hours sopping my hair in conditioner and combing out all the hard work she had just done. Personally, I would have killed me, but we still laugh about it to this day.”

“Ugh, totally embarassing and gross but…in college we went to a house party hosted by this guy I had a crush on. I’d never gotten drunk before and I ended up getting really, really trashed by accident. Long story short, I threw up on this guy’s PS3 (or maybe it was a 2?) and my friend took the blame. I dated that guy for a few months and didn’t confess until we broke up (‘Whatever, I threw up on your PS anyway’—I think those were my very mature parting words).

But she never told a soul, and to this day people still tease her about it. In the end though, I think it was less about the guy and more about her knowing that I’m shy and awkward around strangers—and would have been mortified forever.”

“I got really sick once, and one of my besties took off work one day to take care of me. Brought me soup and everything. I didn’t have any family in the area to help take care of me. She’s the best! Like a sister ”

“One of my best friends surprised me with birthday cupcakes at her own party celebrating her philanthropic achievements. When a friend can think of you during their moment to shine, you know she is a keeper!”

“My BFF (my sister) made me a really great scrapbook when I went off to college freshman year. It had pictures of us, the family, and my friends and I, and had all sorts of advice for college (like, ‘always wear flip flops in the shower’). It was a special book with a lot of memories.”

“I’d just broken up with my first serious boyfriend (first love, first everything) after four tough years right around Fourth of July weekend. Needless to say, I wasn’t feeling too into the patriotic partying. My BFF and I sat in her car and she listened to me babble and cry instead of going to our friend’s party.”
