Though this may have been created with the idea of showing potential teen moms how hard being a parent really is in hopes of deterring them from repeating the mistakes of others, it yielded the reverse effect. It’s a shame that these young ladies have been made into quasi-celebrities, not only do other young ladies get the wrong impression of what being a teen mom is, but those who are actually on the show are seemingly being rewarded for decisions that are not well thought out.
I think these shows are terrible not because it will increase young pregnancy, but because it makes pregnant teens celebrities. They get paid and are in the tabloids, so it gives the impression that teens can get paid and become a star if they are pregnant and have family problems.
Showing the problems the girls face on these shows is a great educational tool for young girls.
I don’t have cable and I’ve only heard about this show. I guess it can be a good thing and be a wake up call for those youngins who are even thinking about having kids at such young age.
I have not seen the show so I can’t really give an opinion.
I don’t watch these shows. I won’t let my daughter watch this.
I think this show offers an invaluable service to teens on the repercussions of having unprotected sex and having a baby too young. I have younger siblings and they say this show makes it very clear that teen pregnancy isn’t fun or cute. For those who argue that it glorifies teen pregnancy by making the teen moms into stars, the girls who are influenced in this way are succeptable to being influenced by almost anything that isn’t good for them anyway. If anything it reinforces the reality that 1-most baby daddys don’t stay with the mother of their child and can’t grasp the responsibilities that come w/parenthood, 2-being a teen mom ruins your social life and you lose most, if not all of your friends who are free to live out thier teenage yrs w/o kids, 3-unless you have an exceptionally supportive family, the next few yrs of your life will be spent living in unstable envionrments, 4-completing your education will be extremely difficult, 5-bad boyfriends usually become worse once the baby comes, so no, a baby can’t save a relationship, and 6-caring for babies is TRULY A 24HR/7DAY A WEEK JOB that’s exausting and trying for even for the best prepared adults. Even with the fame and money that came w/being on Teen Mom/Pregnant at 16, most of these young girls are still struggling to catch up w/thier non parent counterparts.
All I have to say is FINALLY sex ed that isn’t a complete joke to watch. Remembering the unrelatable sex ed videos of my own teenage days–where so many of my classmates dozed off or otherwise didn’t pay attention–Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant are compelling, real and relatable because they are true stories of the consequences of unprotected sex and having a baby too young. The shows are even more appropriate since a lot of the girls have such heartbreaking and harrowing circumstances.
I think it’s a good show to let kids know that it’s no joke getting pregnant at such a young age. I be watching it sometimes and I say hank God that’s not me or wasn’t me.
