Big Love for Nicole Atkins’ New Album (Out February 8!)
As a Smith College grad and women’s media entrepreneur, I am—not surprisingly—a huge fan of musically talented women who can belt it out. A fraction of my favorites include Sara Bareilles, Katy Perry, Pink, Liz Phair and Aimee Mann; you might as well call my Pandora page my own little Lilith Fair.
One artist I have recently added to my playlist is Nicole Atkins. I had the pleasure of meeting this rising star a few weeks ago and getting an exclusive listen to her album Mondo Amore due out on Tuesday, February 8 (one week from today!). Nicole’s music perfectly exemplifies her journey—the soul of a Jersey girl who grew up listening to hair bands, the savvy of a city-dweller (Brooklyn, to be specific), and the charm of a Southern Belle who studied illustration in Charlotte, North Carolina.

To add to her impressive list of accolades, Nicole has been playing instruments since she was nine years old and jamming at local gigs wherever she was living at the time. In 2007, she released her first album Neptune City, and today, four years later after life-changing break-ups with labels and boyfriends (I always say the most beautiful creations in life come out of broken things), she’s launching Mondo Amore (which translates to “Big Love”) to share a new chapter in her story.
The songs on the album are powerful, sexy and honest—just like Nicole’s personality. Leave a comment and let me know what you think of my interview with Nicole. The 20 best comments* will receive a free copy of Mondo Amore.

Great interview, Nicole Atkins is AWESOME! I pre-ordered “Mondo Amore” on iTunes and am so excited that it is coming out this Tuesday (Feb 8th)
Nicole Atkins is a beautiful stripped down artist. With just a guitar and her voice she was able to fill the room where I saw her live. Definitely make sure to go to a show of hers if she stops in your city!
Also, only a couple more days til the CD release!! Can’t wait!!
Haven’t heard of nicole before.
I need to get this CD….not only is her story awesome her music is too.!
I saw her play with My Morning Jacket on New Years Eve in Madison Square Garden in 2009. I was there to see MMJ but was curious about her after the show, so I checked out clips of her at SxSW on youtube. I was blown away by her voice and her presence! Oddly enough, I happened to walk by her once on the street in NYC, but didn’t want to bother her because she was so unassuming then. She is an incredible artist and I’m looking forward to the new album and seeing her play live again.
All I can say is wow! Thanks for introducing us to this amazing artist. I love her old school feel! I’m literally dancing around my room to her music as we speak!!!
not sure if I’ve heard of her before but I will def check her out.. those are also cute pics of you two btw
Nicole Atkins music mirrors that of Roy Orbison and she performs with the same kind of power and energy as a young Patti Smith. Not to mention she’s unbelievably beautiful. Her music incorporates dramatic tension, sweeping emotions, and musical ambition, with Atkins remarkable voice commanding attention at the forefront.
Great interview. I like Nicole’s musical journey. I particularly like her influences from artists like Chrissie Hynde and Stevie Nicks. I look forward to hearing her new album.
Even if I don’t win that awesome cd I’m defiantly going out to buy it!
i just want to thank you for introducing me to a great new artist. not only is she a great inspiration she is truly a go getter and is a great example of how far you can get by following your dreams.
This interview was fantastic. I love her approach to her fans and her musical talent. Her music is heartfelt and mezmorizing. I can really relate to her through her music.
Nicole’s voice is so haunting and beautiful, I can’t wait to check out her new album!
This was a wonderful interview. I haven’t had the opportunity to listen to Nicole Atkins before but after Claudia’s interview I’m more interested now. Thanks for opening yet another door. Love to listen to new music. thanks Claudia
LOVE HER Amazing inspiration for woman to make it in this harsh place! We need strong beautiful woman artist back in the industry now! So exciting! Shes funny down to earth and so honest! Thank You Claudia for sharing with us!
Never heard of her, I liked her look and I will try her music. She is not over the top and relates to the masses. I am 65 years old, “Over the hill by no means”, and try to stay current with the latest music and trends. Can’t wait to listen to her music! I love that she was a hard working gal and made it in the music industry.
“You Go Girl”
I am a Nicole Atkins superfan. I’ve seen her live three times (I even hugged her backstage at a show in DC -yes, I was THAT girl) and plan on seeing her again next month at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Her music invokes so much emotion. My fiance and I are getting married this summer and her music will definitely be in the rotation. I am so stoked for her upcoming album its ridiculous. I also love that she’s started her own kickstarter campaign. Instead of complaining like other music artists about the way the industry has changed with the internet, she has taken the initiative to find new ways to make a living as a musician and reach out to fans. I definitely made a pledge.
