Nest Founder Moves Women Out of Poverty
Not shocking, I get introduced to MANY women-oriented charities and non-profits, but Nest (buildanest.org) touched me deeply for several reasons, which is why I joined their board of trustees a year ago.
1. The founder Rebecca Kousky reminded me of myself at 24. Fresh out of school…with huge dreams and unstoppable determination.
2. Nest gives women in underprivileged countries a chance to start their own businesses by providing small loans and a business curriculum. But unlike your usual loans, Nest loan recipients “repay” the company with their crafts and finished products—indeed different than your everyday “microfinance” organization!
3. Unlike more established organizations like Step Up Women’s Network or Susan G. Komen, Nest is still very young. With my entrepreneurial experience and passion, I’d like to help the organizations that need it the most!
Of course there are the natural synergies with Shecky’s: empowering women, artisans, small business owners…. Nest even sources products for top fashion brands! Recent collaborations have included brands like FEED, Kate Spade, Tory Burch and Trina Turk. I’m hoping I can introduce Nest to many more great companies and people to come…starting with Shecky’s girlfriends like you!
GIRL TALK TIME: Have you ever purchased a Nest product? What do you think of the organization and Rebecca’s story? What is your dream way to empower women? Who should Claudia interview next on Meet My Girlfriends?

Havent heard of this, but willing to check out the website
Never heard of it
We at Kahina Giving Beauty are so excited about our upcoming collaboration with Rebecca and Nest. A hand blocked cosmetic bag sewn by women working with Nest, containing our Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil and Argan soap, extracted and made by the Berber women of Morocco. We give 25% of our profits to support these women.
Sounds like a great idea, I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes a regular way of conducting business. Barter system sure would help some business women right here in the U.S.
very inspirational
Lovely story. I haven’t bought a Nest product yet. I like to empower other young women by being a mentor at work and to my nieces. Starting with my own little corner of the world for now.
