Girlfriend Fun Playlist

Just like Shecky’s, your girlfriends are there for you through fun times (Girls Night Out!) and hard times (bad relationships). In honor of the First Annual National Girlfriend Awards (VOTE NOW!), Venus Zine created a fun playlist for you and your girlfriends to rock out to, dance to, and rejoice in your enduring friendship.

THE REMEMBRANDTS – “I’LL BE THERE FOR YOU”

Made popular as the theme song from the hit television show Friends, this jam is nostalgic and will probably stir up some conversation about the characters and their hilarious mishaps. Hopefully this will inspire you to reminisce about your own adventures as well.

THE PRETENDERS – “I’LL STAND BY YOU”

This ballad puts into words exactly what friendship should be about: standing by each other in the harshest personal times. It was released in 1994 and became a successful single for the Pretenders, because—let’s face it—we all want and need someone to stand by us.

QUEEN – “YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND”

John Deacon, Queen’s bassist, originally wrote this song for his wife, Veronica, but lyrically it transcends romantic love and presents an appreciation for any kind of best friend.

THE WHITE STRIPES – “WE’RE GOING TO BE FRIENDS”

A song that may be best remembered from the opening credits of Napoleon Dynamite, “We’re Going to Be Friends” is about meeting new people at the beginning of a school year and the optimism of knowing you’ll soon make a connection—even if it is during dodgeball.

OUR LADY PEACE – “RIGHT BEHIND YOU (MAFIA)”

The chorus of this song reflects the unconditional love that true friendship involves. Having someone to back you up no matter what? Now that’s a true-blue best friend.

CLUB NOUVEAU – “LEAN ON ME”

By giving Bill Withers’ piece a reggae-like beat, Club Noveau took it from the slow summer camp song to something we can groove to and enjoy. It also became their most successful single, topping the charts in many countries.

RIHANNA – “UMBRELLA”

This smash hit catapulted Rihanna to stardom and is possibly her most successful single to date. It was originally sent to Britney Spears, but we like to “ella ella ella” -ing with Rihanna.

SPICE GIRLS – “WANNABE”

In the ’90s, The Spice Girls represented girl power and the importance of friendship with this piece. As the lyrics reiterate, your friends are usually dead-on when it comes to who you should date, and who will treat you as well as you deserve.

HOOVERPHONIC – “OUT OF SIGHT (BEST FRIENDS)”

This song celebrates the timelessness of true friendship. No matter how far away or how long it’s been since you’ve seen each other, your best friends are forever.

ANDREW GOLD – “THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND”

You may remember another version of this song as the theme for The Golden Girls, the ultimate example of girlfriends reaching their golden years and still managing to have the laughter and life that great friendships thrive on.
