Chance Encounters: Meeting a Significant Other

How did you meet your other half (or even an ex)? Sometimes the stories are fairly tame—you were introduced by mutual friends and fell in love from there. Sometimes the stories are completely ridiculous—you stumbled upon each other in the most obscure of circumstances. As one Staffer points out, the latter is the case a lot of times and you never know when you’ll meet someone.

“I was moving to a new city in two weeks and the night had arrived for my combination going away/birthday bash. I was so excited—until the cancellations started rolling in. My best friend had a severe stomachache. Another pal refused to go ‘alone’ since our other friends weren’t going. One of the guys I was interested in said he forgot and made other plans. In tears (but in a killer dress with my normally wild hair straightened into sleek submission), I wondered if I should even bother to go.

I toughed it out and showed up for my own soirée. A small group of around seven friends (not the 35 that I’d envisioned) rallied around me. By the time I got to my taxi stand to catch a cab home, I was still a bit bummed. I surveyed the group around me and saw a really gorgeous guy who looked extremely familiar. Suddenly, I realized that my friend had made out with him at a party—in a time and place (high school) where making out with people at parties was acceptable.

Fueled by drunk confidence, I approached the familiar fella. ‘Hey, I think I know you. Brian, right?’ The hottie seemed taken aback, but a bit intrigued as he confirmed that he was in fact Brian. When I explained how I knew him (I got very detailed about the party), he totally lit up and thought it was hilarious that here we were in a cab stand, encountering each other years later. As fate would have it, we lived in the same general area, so we shared a cab home, chatted and exchanged digits. We had a lot in common and knew so many of the same people.

We ended up seeing each other for just about every night of the two weeks before I moved. Our romance didn’t turn into a relationship, but I did go on a few more dates with him when I visited my old home. The most refreshing part was realizing how you meet the most interesting people at unexpected times. This guy was an out-of-nowhere Prince Charming, a happy ending at a time when I was feeling absolutely awful. And running into this dude was such an interesting case of déjà-vu.”

GIRL TALK TIME: What’s the weirdest way you’ve ever met a guy? Ever had a serious case of ‘small world’ with someone you’ve dated (a.k.a. you’re pretty sure you have parallel lives, or you keep running into them)?

I was actually married when I met my significant other. We both went to the same university, but had different majors. Then, we did our masters together with a class of 150 people, but hung out in different groups. One of our classes gave us the opportunity to go to China to get more business exposure. We were in Beijing when we finally got to know each other. He had in fact noticed me at the beginning of the year, but never made a move since I was married. By our second encounter I knew that I had made a mistake and that he was the one for me. I ended my marriage that year and we’ve been together for almost 5 years now. Not once have I regretted my decision.

I met my hubs at a bar – it’s the truth. I was not looking to meet a guy. I just went with my friend and I was actually going to bail on her that night but she convinced me to go dancing. I played hard to get and didn’t let him buy me a drink. We inseparable ever since – 6 years later – so sometimes the “meat market” does work. Just sayin’.

I met my Tomcat at 4am in a lounge. All I remambered of him an houer later was he was a good dancer and had a great smile (it was too dark to really see him, and for God’s sake it was a lounge… didn’t think I will be married to the man a year later ;p). He followed me out with my friends and bugged me until I gave him my #. Than he called me every day to ask me if i had some time for coffee. Eventually I gave in (my dad made me go out and stop the phonecalls). After the first coffee date (it turned out into a dinner date) we made planse for the next night and than next and we called and talked and after 3 months we realized that that was it. We had found each other and everything was perfect. We married after 8 months of dating. Now, 6 years later with a 4 year old son we are still happy and in love. We do fight but we never go to bed before making up and resolving the problem :) .

I met my long time ex boyfriend through volleyball at my high school. I was a manager for the boys volleyball team and he was new to the high school. One day while I was waiting for my mom to pick me up (I wasn’t cool enough to have a car yet) he waited with me and even asked to bring me home when I lived 15ish minutes out of the way from him. My mom asked me as soon as I got into the car if I would ever date him. I told my mom that “I would never date someone going into college when I was still in high school.” That was the complete opposite of what happened – we ended up dating for 4 years until we recently broke up. He is still one of my best friends to this very day! I am currently single but this is my wonderful story.

my current bf i had known for about 2 years or more (we’ve now been dating just over a month)… before i moved to the city i always went into this portuguese restaurant (and even after whenever i felt homesick). one of my faves, it was one of the only places i was brave enough to go eat alone. he was bartending/ waiting tables having moved from brazil… we always talked – small talk mainly, and always had liked each other but it never went further than the restaurant… i went w friends, boyfriends even… and finally after a lunch meeting w my boss i stayed behind w a glass of wine chatting w him (since i had already decided he was my future boyfriend lol) and we finally exchanged numbers. since then, we’ve talked everyday (honeymoon stage). i find it amusing that we both felt it when we first met and it took us 2 yrs to get together.

I met him through my brother….I never paid any attention to him until one day we were on instant messenger through facebook & we talked everyday while he was deployed. I looked forward to our correspondance with each other and when he was on his way back I knew he was the one for me. I saw him for the first time in almost 2 years. I don’t want to be with anyone else. We built a solid foundation and there is no going back….I can’t wait to build a future with him.

I met my remarkeable man when we were 19 yrs old at a party off campus. He had the perfect smile and I was love-struck. The rest is blissful history with some bumps in the road, but in marriage love never fails.
