Prepping Your House Before a Guy Comes Over

We’ve all seen classic chick flicks like Clueless, where Cher spends hours trying to get rid of a blotchy face and creating the perfect lighting, throwing rock hard loaves of pre-made cookie dough in the oven because “you always need something baking.” We got to thinking about how to really prepare your pad before inviting a guy over.

CLEAN UP! We know we aren’t your mothers, but please, do clean up before company comes over. Even if he’s only seeing your living room (or bedroom!), make sure everything is tidy. This means folding and putting away clothes, dusting and scrubbing the bathroom. Invest in products like Febreze Fabric Refresher ($5.29 at eStore) to spritz sofas, and a Swiffer Sweepervac ($31.05 for the Starter Kit at Amazon.com) for easy cleaning. We also advise that Fluffybear, Mushyface and Mister Socks make a visit to the closet. Check out this article on quick cleaning tips for more.

SMELL GOOD! While Cher Horowitz swears by baking as her preferred home scent, we saw what a disaster that turned out to be (spoiler: she burns the cookies!). Stick with something like these Round Reed Diffusers ($7.99) from Bed Bath & Beyond to create a fragrant scent that will carry its way through your abode. Always spritz on your signature scent, but go easy with it, since you aren’t trying to give your guy an asthma attack. A light squirt on the wrists and/or neck, and a walk through your perfume cloud is all you need.

BE PREPARED! Depending on what kind of evening you have planned, eating may not be in the cards, but you don’t want to be known as the girl with the empty fridge. Opt for something not too pungent, nothing that could leave you bad-breathed, get easily stuck in your teeth, and nothing that will make you too thirsty and prompt several bathroom runs (really kills the mood). Stock up on fruit (usually available pre-cut…phewf!) like strawberries, grapes and melon or cut-up veggies. Popcorn is also an easy option.

GET COMFY! Chances are he doesn’t expect you in your tightest dress and highest heels. Maxi dresses are easy to hang in while still looking put-together (loving the Walter Green Ikat Silk Jersey V-Neck Maxi Dress, on sale for $203.99 at Bluefly). For a shorts gal, these adorable Brandy Shorts by Yumi Kim (on sale now for $88) are comfy and cute, while our pants chicas can rock jeggings (like the Free People Super Stretch Jeggings, $68 at Lord & Taylor). Keep hair down, as your guy will be more apt to play with it that way, and if you’re a makeup gal, go easy. Remember, he’s coming to your house, so relish in that!

Step 4. If you want dont have to but buy some lollies or food that you’s both like.
Step 5. Have fun most inportantly.

I told one of my crushes that I wanted him to come over and I got a message from him asking me what we would do, and so now I have to buy some movies that we could watch in my room, but I still don’t know what he’d say if we were gonna watch movies that day. Also, I don’t wanna stay in the house all day. I know he wouldn’t want to either. The crazy/creepy thing is that I’ve had a crush on this dude for 3 years going on 4 years. He’s a good guy. I’m just nervous of what he’ll think of my room.

I live alone and only have one bathroom – so I always keep some Clorox Wipes handy to wipe away any renegade make-up. And a pretty, opaque shower curtain can hide anything you don’t want him to see!

i’m loving reed diffusers as opposed to candles. but yes, you should always have a tidy house w/ some finger foods in the pantry/fridge and look cute and comfy.
