Makeover Dad

Pops may be able to fix our car squeaks and leaks, repair anything broken and be the hero who wards off any scary noise-makers, but that doesn’t mean his wardrobe is at all okay. As a thoughtful gift for Dad’s Day (June 20, mark it!), help him clean up his look. We’ve got some perfect updates to his old-school styles.
Our solutions to dad’s old-school style:
1. Toss out the novelty ties and stock up on solid or striped ones in bright colors. Brooks Brothers has a nice selection, like the Argyle and Sutherland Repp Tie ($75).
2. Obama was the first to popularize the ‘dad jeans’ and we are here to veto them. Levi’s Original 501’s in Dark Aged ($59.50) add a hint of chic to an old classic.
3. Just like dad taught us, we are telling him to say no to penny loafers and increase his stock in a pair of Oxfords instead. Gift him with the Cole Haan ‘Air Colton Split’ Oxford ($198) or just subtly suggest it in your Father’s Day card.
4. Hawaiian tops are just plain ugly. Button-down shirts with the sleeves rolled up will have dad looking fresh. J. Crew’s Secret Wash Lightweight Button-down Shirt in Sun-Check Plaid ($59.50) let’s him keep the color and pattern, but save the cheesy.
5. Unless he’s in a stadium, sport jerseys are meant to stay on the field. A plain white tee is all-purpose and sports-appropriate, too. Hanes Premium White Tees ($8) are cheap and practical.
6. Nothing says “I’m old” like a pair of 1980s spectacles. Say hello to 2010 in some cutting edge glasses. How badass are Posh Eyewear’s Clark Kent ($67) eyeglasses? After all, Dad is superman.
7. Who thought tube socks were a good idea with shorts? Ankle socks all the way. The perfect gift if you don’t have a lot to spend, Luxe Socks ($20) from Neiman Marcus are fancy yet affordable (all dads love socks!).
As for grooming…
- Nix the side-burns, pretty please? Saturday Night Fever’s temperature has gone way down.
- If dad rocks the beard, have his trim it every week to keep it real.
- We aren’t suggesting man-manis, but dry hands are just gross. Give him unscented lotion to lather his paws up. How about something from the Vaseline Men line?
LET US KNOW, LADIES! Anything else you’d like to add to the list to save dad’s wardrobe? Tell us some of the weird ensembles your dad has created on his own.

My father would NEVER go for a makeover.
The rayon tropical shirts!
love the ties !
My boyfriend’s kids constantly try to get him to wear something besides Hugo Boss, but he won’t budge from the brand. I’m just trying to get him to UNtuck his shirt! LOL We plan on ganging up on him this father’s day… we’re buying him all different brands and we’ll make him play “dress-up” =0) I bet he’d love his new duds!
ooo la la
My dad used to tuck in his tee shirts all the time and wear a mismatched belts to relax on the weekends. My step-mom and I would constantly bug him about it. Finally he’s learn to loosen up and leave his darn shirt out, cool off, and have some fun. Of course now he’s in his 60′s! haha
