Friendship Playlist

Certain songs remind us of certain peoples, times or places—especially when it comes to our girlfriends. In honor of National New Friends, Old Friends Week (Sunday, May 16-Saturday, May 22) we asked our Shecky’s Staffers what oldie tunes reminded them of old-time friends. Then, we skipped a few tracks (er, years) and asked them what songs remind them of their girls right now.

Pump some of these jams at your next party—they’re all fun and girl-friendly. (And we guess Gaga’s got a lot of chick-schtick since she’s mentioned three times!)

Oldies

“Run Around” by Blues Traveler: “It always makes me think of summers at the beach and my best friend blasting it on her car radio as we drove around with the windows down.”

“Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears: “We thought she was the coolest person in the ENTIRE world and needless to say, we tried our best to be mini Britneys…making dance skits, buying clothes like she had and more. BTW, we still love Britney today just as much as we did then—we were able to look past her psychotic break down(s).

“Like a Prayer” by Madonna: “My friends and I made up a dance to this song, which was mostly a pantomime of the lyrics. The best part included holding hands and dancing in a circle for ‘I wanna take you there.’ And yes, we have home video to prove it….”

“Faithful” by Go West: “It reminds me of my best friend from high school. We would play it in her car and she would bop to it with zero rhythm. Love her!”

“Wannabe” by the Spice Girls: “We all went through a redonk SPICE GIRLS phase, and I was ALWAYS Scary Spice—she was sooo kick-ass, how could she NOT be my fave?!”

“Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguleria: “My best friend and I went to our first ever concert to see Christina Aguilera. We were so lame and screamed our lungs out to every song, but obviously “Genie in a Bottle” was our favorite!”

“MMMBop” by Hanson: “My group was really into Truth or Dare (stupid stuff, like kissing the bottom of the pool or ringing and running at a cute boy’s house) the summer we graduated elementary school. Somehow this song became the anthem.”

“Juicy” by Notorious B.I.G: “I cannot even count the number of times my college girls and I rapped this song on Tuesday nights—a.k.a Virginia Tech’s unofficial karaoke night at T.O.T.S. (Top of the Stairs)—every senior’s favorite bar.”

“Say You’ll Be There” by the Spice Girls: “When I was younger and the Spice Girls were pretty much the coolest thing ever, my friends and I had a dance to this song. I could probably still remember it only because the choreography was so literal to the lyrics. So embarrassing.”

Newbies

“Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga: “When the video came out, six of my girlfriends and I spent an entire evening watching it on repeat with some creative commentary (and delicious cocktails). Whenever I hear that song I think of my girls!”

“Blah Blah Blah” by Ke$ha:Really great song to get me and my gals pumped for a night out…sans boring get-to-know-you suitor chit chat PLUS free drinks and possibly a make-out session in the back of the bar (no wonder it’s a top 100 hit).”

“Single Ladies” by Beyonce: “Even though I’m the only one not single out of the bunch, I still belt every single line like I am! It is by far the best song to groove to with your besties.”

“Just Dance” by Lady Gaga: “Even if it’s kind of old by now, I remember when it first came out and since then it reminds me of my last year of college, going out, singing and being goofy before/while going out with my BFF.”

“Waking Up in Vegas” by Katy Perry: “Ummm…we may not exactly wake up in Vegas, but we’ve found ourselves in some pretty interesting locales the morning after!”

“Picture to Burn” by Taylor Swift: “We’re all pretty big Taylor fans (and probably way too old for this). This song is great for those man-hating sessions.

“Telephone” by Lady Gaga: “There’s a time and a place for boyfriends and that time and place is NOT a girls night out. This song reminds me of dance-partying with my pals—no matter how heinous our moves are.”

“Stillness is the Move” by The Dirty Projectors: “Not only do the DP’s rep my Brooklyn neighborhood (Bed-Stuy, holla!), but this track in particular describes everything about a night out with my NYC chicas—losing ourselves in the music. :)

“Smiley Faces” by Gnarls Barkley: “This is the song we listen to before we go out just because it has a fun beat, but the lyrics are actually really sweet.”
